Dan,

You can reach Dire Dawa with at least three types of road transportation;
http://www.skybusethiopia.com/site/
Skybus goes everyday except Friday; don’t know where their ticket office is; +251-11-156 80 80/ +251-11-156 85 85
http://www.selambus.com/selambus/selam.asp
Selambus have a ticketing office net to the train station in Addis +251 118 50 0281/2 and in Dire Dawa.
The third mean are other buses and minibuses leaving Merkato main bus station or the station next to the train station (Lagare) in Addis;
The buses leave at 5.30-6 am, as the trip is long (8-12 hours, depending on weather and road conditions, stops or bus changes in case you take a minibus), and buses do not drive at night.
Ah! For Selam and Sky, you have to purchase the tickets in advance, i.e. the day before your trip.
The train is not anymore operating.
