Slobodka Yeshiva
Posted: Mon January 17, 2011 03:00 AM UTC
What is the exact address, including the side-street address, of the new Beis-HaMedrash/Slobodka Yeshiva building located on present-day Kernaves (formerly Jesiboto) gatve, on the corner of Vezeju gatve in Vilijampole?

This is a four-story building, and a commemorative plaque erected in 1991 is prominently displayed at the building's entrance.

The original Slobodka Yeshiva was located only one block away on Paneriu gatve 9 and Kernaves gatve 12.

Thank you to the two people who responded to my first post on October 27. Any information that you can provide will be appreciated, as my grandfather's family prayed there over a century ago.

hello
Are you sure about the street? You see- on Vezeju street , there are only private houses just -1 or 2 stores. It's paralel to Paneriu street and any bigger building would be easy to spot. The corner of Kernaves and Vezeju street is clearly visible from the bus stop maybe 15m away and the really is no four store building. It's possible that the building you are looking for is somewhere closer to Veterinary Academy, Tilzes street and surrounding, either near Sajungos square. If it's memorial building then is couldn't have been destroyed.

Since my last post, I found out that the address of the New Slobodka Yeshiva and Beis-Midrash was Paneriu gatve 51, a four-story building on the corner of Mazvydo.

The original Yeshiva, a wooden building, is located at Paneriu 9 and Kernaves 12. It was also located in an adjacent building at Kernaves 16, on the corner of Vezeju.

The Shuster (Shoemakers) Kloyz was located on or near Paneriu 15. Does this building still exist?

Additionally, the Neier (New) Kloyz was located on Veliuonos 29, near the corner of Paneriu. I don't know if this is still the current building number, but it still exists.

hi
Oh- the problem is that some buildings might be destroyed or rebuilt. Lately heritage comission is rather strict about historical sites, but during soviet period and early independance times(1990ties) lots of old buildings were lost. And those were wooden houses mostly, so lots of them suffered from fires , accidental or not. But just in case-next time i'll be passing by Paneriu str. i'll take a look.

Checking the maps again, the New Slobodka Yeshiva on Paneriu gatve 51 was located near Sajungos Square.

The Butchers Kloyz (Synagogue) was on the corner of Ariogalos gatve and Linkuvos gatve, where the Kovno Ghetto Memorial is located. The address is either Ariogalos 20 or Linkuvos 20, and a wooden house is still there. What is the distance and proximity between this memorial and house address?

The New Kloyz on Veliuonos gatve 29, near Paneriu gatve, still exists. Is there a commemorative plaque on the building?

Both the Old Synagogue and Old Beis-HaMidrash were located next to each other on Jurbarkas gatve 2, near the river. Are there any buildings there today, or it is simply an empty lot?

My great-great-grandfather lived on Ariogalos gatve 74a (present-day Ariogalos 27?), and his son lived nearby on Kokliu gatve 9. Other relatives also lived nearby on Ariogalos 97 (present-day Ariogalos 51?) and Veliuonos 19.

Lastly, behind Mesininku gatve, directly in the middle of this street, is Plateliu gatve. Are there any houses or historical sites in this alley?

Can you provide any photographs of these streets and addresses?

Hi
Old wooden building on Paneriu 9 still stands, i didn't notice any memorial plate on it, but i've seen only one side passing-by. Maybe there is plate behind the corner of Kernaves str.
I can send you some photos but then i'll need your personal e-mail. I don't think vt mail can send bigger files.

I walked the streets of Slabodka based on your posting. Took photos of every Yiddishe home, shteibels and place still standing. If you need photos of your family homes etc, I am more than happy to share them with you. I spent 2 days photographing.

Thank you very much for your post. Do you have the addresses of the shteibels? I am also looking for addresses of kloyzn, namely the Shneidershe (Tailors), Katzovishe (Butchers), Shustershe (Shoemakers) and Furmanen (Wagon drivers) kloyzn.
