Visiting Brussels
Posted: Tue January 4, 2011 11:48 PM UTC
Greetings from the USA,

My wife and I will be visiting Brussels hopefully
in September for approx. 10 days.

What area is considered the "Old Town"?

Anyone have any suggestions, or leads, as to any nice
apartments in/near the "Old Town" that we can check
out that are resonably priced?

About a hotel, is anyone familiar with the following
which is located on the Place Rouppe, halfway between
the Grand Place and Bussels South Station ....

"A La Grande Cloche Hotel"
10 Place Rouppe - 1000 Brussels - Belgium

Is the hotel located in a nice location near the main
attractions? It seems to be reasonably priced ....

Any suggestions as where to go for 1/2 day or full day
trips.

What is the weather like there in September? We will be
going the 1st part of September.

If possible, we would like to meet local VTer's who live
in Brussels while we are there. If you are a local and would
like to meet up while we are there, please send us an e-mail.

That is all we can think of for now, but I am sure that we
will have other questions down the road ....

Happy Travels,

Al and Mary / USA

The one with older houses. ;-)
Seriously: The area around Grand Place, City of Brussels

I am sorry I cannot provide an opinion on hotels.

Daytrips: Ghent? Bruges?

> What is the weather like there in September?

Unpredictable, but most likely mild and not too rainy.

Can I suggest definitely Bruges for a day trip.1 hour by train from Brussels and in my opinion a beautiful place to visit.
So much old architecture,a canal or/and horseride round some lovely sites.
I agree about the weather totally unpredictable but definitely won't be minus temperatures.:-)

hello!

we went to Brussels last OCtober and it is a great place to base yourself. I would suggest some day trips:

Ypres - we did a wonderful tour of the battlefields with a wonderful chap at frontline tours - excellent(was about 1hr 45 on the train) but well worth it a wonderful town.

Ghent - lovely city just short of an hour away

Bruges - you HAVE to visit here - wonderful place, so romantic, I cannot say enough good things about it!

Antwerp - we were not so keen on this place but perhaps that was because it was raining all day! - but it is the diamond capital of the world!

It may also be realistic to travel to paris or amsterdam for the day if you could get a good deal on trains but one other place I love very much is Maastricht in the netherlands.

Hope that helps x

There are so many places you could go to on a day trip from Brussels it's difficult to know where to start! Places are so accessible by train you could reach at least 3 different countries (France, Netherlands and Germany).
What kind of place would you like to visit? Specific types of Art galleries, museums, shops, beer, wine, food, castles, cathedrals and so on. From there we should be able to help you a bit more.

I stayed in a hostel no where near the 'Old Town' so can't really help on accommodation. If you type your hotel into google maps it shows you the exact location and, of course, what else surrounds it. It is central; close to a museum and gallery and the spectacular market place.

Place Roupe is at 600 m from Bruxelles-Midi South station = unsafe area
and at 700 m from the Grand Place = mostly safe.

Best to read "warnings and dangers" tips on Brussels.

Hi. Brussels is a fine choice for a base - as you can tell from the previous replies. Place Rouppe is fine - not the most sallunrious square in Brussels but really a stone's throw from the centre. It's on a main boulevard. You wouldn't want to go walking in the back streets between there and the Gare du Midi, but it's right on the edge of the main centre of Brussels. The hotel you mention has been around for a long time but I've never stayed there as I live in brussels. Have a look at booking.com. I find the prices very good and the recommendations reliable. You'd want to be in the centre or around Rogier. September can be pricey as it's the start of the conference season...

As for side trips, it would be a shame not to visit Bruges if you ahve a day to spare. Otherwise much depends on your taste in trips and sights.

Tongeren (where I live) is Belgium's oldest town and can be reached from Brussels by train.
Here is the link to my Tongeren-page : http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/114fff/54ed2/
We have a very nice Gallo-Roman museum, a cosy beguinage, a beautiful basilica, ...
If interested, just ask away ...

Another city that's nice to visit is Liege (Luik/Luttich), also verey easy to reach by train.

And of course Brugga, as can be read above.

I went there in late August, early September in 09 - the weather was great. September and May are considered shoulder months for touist season both because of seasonal changes - moderate, and most schools are in session. Sorry, I am not any help with motels as I have sister and her family there that I sponge off of. Trips in no special order -Antwrep, Mons, Brugge, Ghent. A little further is Luxemburgh or Trier Germany. If you are a WW1 history buff I would highly recommend Ypres. I am gong back in May. Enjoy
