Just an idea
Posted: Mon December 27, 2010 07:28 PM UTC
I am ariving in Osaka in early February and i have an intense desire to plan nothing. No hotel, no travel route, just no plans. I'll be staying for a couple of weeks. Just want to see if anybody's got any thoughts on such an idea. Is anybody inspired as i am? Or is it appalling in some way?

Appalling it isn't - lots of people prefer to travel in a free and easy style.
In early February you shouldn't have any problems, it is not high season.

You might however still want to read up a bit about Osaka and the surrounding areas so that once there you will have at least some idea of what you might like to do.

It really depends on your personal travel style and needs.

Personally, we tend to pre-book accomodation, especially for the first place we are going to stay at. Searching for accomodation right after stepping off an international flight being jetlagged is no fun at all.

There's nothing wrong with doing that, it's your choice, but I think that you will have a more rewarding time if you do some research to identify places that interest you and things you would like to do. You certainly don't have to plan out every minute of your day, but in Japan, where communication may not be easy, it can save you a lot of lost time if you have some goals.

Same with the hotel, if you just show up without any hotel information how do you know if the hotel you choose is a reasonable value in terms of cost, location, services, etc...

You don't have to book a hotel all the way through 2 weeks, but a reservation for the first couple of days would allow you to get your bearings.

Hi you may want to check my HP see if that gives you some idea of staying and transportation in east Japan... I used to travel a lot by myself and stay at friends' when I was traveling. This always makes me feel home-alike which were really good, so I just start to provide my own house for accommondating travellers, if you are interested, let me know. Regarding the area of Tokyo / Yokohama, I think I can give you some advice of where to go.

Sometimes it's fun not to plan anything. :)

But in exchange, you may miss out some interesting events happening there, or have to pay extra for the last minute booking, etc.

Have fun in Osaka!

Add me to the, do it if that's what you like, side. I tend to plan things out a lot, but keep an open mind. When I travel to different places for a big tour, especially in Japan, I tend not to keep restrained to a "schedule". I will plan the first night, especially if flying in, but keep everything else free. I always research before going anywhere as I don't want to waste time asking people. However, just randomly choosing a place and walking around is also a lot of fun, and in many ways more enjoyable.

Personally, I like to see and do as much as I can and pay as little as possible, so I like to plan, although I am still flexible. A trip with no plans for me makes me feel like I will waste a lot of time and money and not get to do or see much. It also seems more stressful. I don't want to run around trying to find a hotel when I could use that time to sightsee/explore.

Planning nothing is a personal choice. If you are comfortable getting around and you can speak the language (or are comfortable not knowing anything) then it will be okay as long as you are prepared to NOT see and do many things that you actually could have done had you planned.

It also depends on how much you know about it before you go. If your "intense desire" entails an intense lack of knowledge of any sites, cities, etc. then once again, I think there are a lot of opportunities to miss out on things. If you get on a train and get off at a random station, for example, you MAY find it's worth the stop OR you may find that you've gotten off in the middle of nowhere with no sites or anything worthwhile.

If you do have a lot of knowledge already though, it can be fun going to some of the famous sites but with a lot of time to wander around and explore.

In the end, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks. If that is your travel style or something you've always wanted to do, then it may be worth it for you!
