Need recommendations in planning a trip
Posted: Mon December 27, 2010 05:22 AM UTC
There are six of us traveling to Ho Chi Minh City arriving at the end of February and staying for 15 days. My wife is Vietnamese and her sister an husband will be traveling with us as well so the language should not be a problem.

This is there first trip back to Saigon for my wife and her sister in 35 years so there is a lot they want to see (which is my concern, trying to do too much). The following is a tentative schedule.

Feb 25 - 27 Ho Chi Minh City
Feb 28 Fly to Hue
March 1 Hue
March 2 - 4 on the 2nd drive to Hoi An and stay until the 4th or 5th

Option 1
Go to Dalat Feb 5 - 7th
back to Ho Chi Minh City 8 - 11th

Option 2
Go to Hanoi on the 5th
Halong Bay 6 and 7th
Hanoi on the 8th and get an evening flight back to Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City to visit family 9th , 10, 11th

Are we trying to do too much in a short time?
Would it be better to do a 2 day trip to the Mekong Delta and skip Hanoi and Halong Bay.
How many days do you need to do a Hanoi and Halong Bay trip?
Are we staying too long in any of the other Cities?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Fifteen days is a fair amount of time to see a good amount of Vietnam. My wife and I spent three weeks and felt we got a representative view of the country. In a country that is long and narrow like Vietnam, it often helps to fly into one city and out of another to save backtracking. In your case, arriving in February, it would be better to come into Saigon and travel north to Hanoi as the weather should be more favorable in both places. Saigon is a great city but it has been very westernized and sights are not its hallmark. The food however is excellent. The Mekong Delta is very nice but not sure it's a can't miss. We did it en route to Cambodia so we did not have to backtrack and it was "on the way." We bypassed Dalat though many people love it, we chose to hit the coast along that part of the trip. Hue and Hoi An are surely must see cities but I don't think you need much more than a couple days in each unless you are a real history buff. It seems you are willing to fly and that will cut out much of your travel time. It seems you should be able to "see" Saigon and Da Lat in four or five days and then fly up to Hue/Hoi An area and spend another four or five days there. Then fly up to Hanoi and you should have enough time to see it and do an organized trip to Halong Bay. Though the latter is touristy, it is stunning. It might not be a really relaxing trip but when are you going to be back in Vietnam again and they've waited 35 years for this trip so try and see what you can. It certainly does not sound like you are trying to see everything which is good as its far too big an area to cover in two weeks. Check out some of the pages on VT for more details. Have a great trip.

I would try to find a whole month than two weeks. See if it is possible so that you do not have to cram your vacation. Cheers Tommy x

I am going to Thailand in may alone for 2 weeks but thought maybe I should have a week in Vietnam. I don't have any knowledge as yet about Vietnam, so can you recommend places to see ?

NokNok, You can do Halong Bay on a day trip from Hanoi! I did that! I'd recommend all 3 nights in Hanoi - there's much to see and ambience to soak in, instead of rush, rush, rush! It will also allow enough time for your wife to get a lovely aodhai (did I get that right?) tailor made :-)

You can buy your wife an Ao Dai (Vietnamese dress, with slits down the side, worn over a pair of pants) but if she is caucasian she might find the top too tight - so better take her dress measurements with you, for one to be tailor made for her. You can choose from the gorgeous materials they have at the tailor shops in the old quarter along e.g. Leong Van Can street (did I spell that right?) in Hanoi.

I would not skip Hanoi but for someone coming from a city full of limestone outcrops, I could have given Halong Bay a skip! But if that is unfamiliar terrain for you, I would include it. I did it on a day trip from Hanoi (only coz I didn't have enough time to do Sapa) and find that was more than enough.

I think I have some pics of Halong Bay on my Vietname pages?? Gotta check it I did!
