Madrid -Toledo AVE - pre book tickets?
Posted: Fri December 17, 2010 01:45 PM UTC
We will be travelling from Madrid to Toledo (and back) in mid-January, and plan to catch the AVE.

Do we need to pre-book the train tickets?

We will want to catch the 15:30 train from Madrid to Toldeo, and return on the 10:25 back to Madrid a few days later.

Thanks

Sue,

The answer is a definite maybe. This is a commuter route as well as a tourist route, (who knows how many from Richmond will turn up for your preferred journey time without forethought). If you know what days you will travel purchase in advance and print your tickets at home, to avoid any worry.

Hello Sue,

As far as I remember a seat reservation is obligatory on Spanish AVE (Talgo) trains. If the train is fully booked, than no more tickets will be sold.

It once happened to me that I got the very last seat on a Barcelona to Madrid Talgo train.

So if you are sure which train to take, make sure to prebook tickets as soon as possible. Either online or at the train stations in Spain.

I hope this helps,

HORSCHECK

I was interested because you say that you want to catch the AVE. Many people looking for the fast train in Spain mistake the AVE with the AVANT and vice versa. On the short line from Madrid to Toledo you can take a dedicated AVANT train which is IMHO the best and quickest way to travel. A 30 minute journey. If you choose the AVE train it will be more expensive and take the same time. I see that there is an AVANT train that leaves at 15.50 which is 20 minutes after the AVE. But check the time table on www.renfe.com

By the way the AVE train starts in Albaceta and comes up from the south east via Cuenca before reaching Madrid and then it finishes at Toledo. Whereas the AVANT Madrid - Toledo just goes back and forth. So I would recommend taking the AVANT at €10 one way and frankly you can get to the station 30 minutes ahead you can get your tickets then for the times of the trains you have mentioned. A return would be good of course.
If you want to catch the AVE then no need to book in advance as this train will not be carrying many people as those few who are coming from Albacete and Cuenca will mostly alight at Atocha and the locals won't pay the extra money to use it for the short 30 minute trip in the middle of January.

As a further comment. Reaching Toledo can also be made by the bus and it is a very frequent service starting in Madrid from Plaza Eliptica Interchange. The bus station at Toledo is actually closer to the city than the train and many people prefer to use the bus. It is about €9 return and journey takes one hour on the direct bus and they leave quite frequently. See www.alsa.es for more details.
