| New Caledonia | School trip... hopefully Posted: Sun January 18, 2004 10:32 AM UTC
In July this year my French class is hopefully going to visit NC and I was wondering, what are the common prices for some things over there? Just ordinary things like a can of coke, a meal at a cafe, clothes in there shops, and what some good shops are to visit, things that we could do in Noumea, preferably on the cheap side. What would be a reasonable amount of money to have for spending over there, other than activities, transport and accomodation, just spending money, the rest is included in what we have to pay but how much should I bring for souvineers and stuff like that?

I spent a few weeks in New Caledonia in 1997 and had a wonderful time. It was, however, a little pricey. I can't remember exactly how much things cost, but I do recall spending around 30-40 US dollars each day without doing any big tours or anything. The most efficient backpacker's lodge I've ever stayed at is located at the top of the hill. That should ease costs a little bit. And you'll have an easier time than I did if you speak French.
Here are a few things I can recommend doing in Noumea: --National Museum --Noumea Aquarium --Beaches on the outskirts of town (very beautiful) If you guys had some time, you could see the outer islands. I have seen many beautiful South Pacific beaches, and these are some of the finest. In any case, just bring a lot of money. It's not cheap, but it's very charming. Hope this helps. Sean

Take a look at my pages for Noumea and Isle of Pines. I was there last year. Can't remember what the exact prices were but I thought things were not as dear as we had been led to believe. The beaches and lookouts around Noumea are lovely. They do many different types of tours from bus, horse and carriage and harley bike ones.
Isle of Pines is very expensive, very exclusive but georgeous. I strayed into a beach side resort and was charged $15 for a bowl of hot chips. I think there may have been less pricey accomodation there though. It's worth a look at if just as a day trip. Hope this helps.....Lou
