Weather in December
Posted: Wed October 20, 2010 12:58 PM UTC
We will be in London 1st-3rd in December. We read it rains 15 out of 30 days and it doesn't snow. Should we plan to wear rain boots and carry an umbrella? As in Seattle, USA- people are not bothered by the weather. We found the same in Dublin. Is it true people continue their daily routines and think little of the rain? Is it simply a light rain?
ANy information would be great!

It can rain quite hard. It would be better to wear a hooded jacket than take an umbrella, especially in crowded places where umbrellas are a nuisance (poking people in the face ..) If you are going to quieter places, then an umbrella would be an asset. Except of course, it could be windy at the same time in which case an umbrella would be no good at all !

Dress for it and go with the flow: umbrellas, raincoat, gloves and waterproof shoes. Weather happens everywhere in the world and you just have to take it as it comes - no way to predict what it will be. Sightsee as planned.

Nobody can predict the weather in UK let alone London ! if you are travelling and can look up a forecast just before the days you arrive then it may be best.
This is the UK MET Office for London

You could hit a dry spell but chilly for example.

"The mid-winter monsoon in England starts around 15 December, so you should be okay. Men who carry an umbrella must wear a bowler hat within the City of London, i.e. the financial district. Rain boots may be worn if alighting from a muddy Range Rover."

Seriously though, if you are used to Seattle, you should have no problems in London. The reason why the weather tends to be such a frequent topic of conversation in England is its unpredictability. There is no rainy season; it can – and does – rain at any time of the year, although never with the ferocity encountered in southern Asia. And if you do get caught in a shower, we even have Starbucks……

If you plan to carry a small rucksak or bag, then a fold-away cagoul or light waterproof jacket might be a good idea with the warm clothes being layers of shirt/jumper etc.
The problem with a warm and waterproof coat is that they are unbearably hot once you get inside a heated building or shop.

A waterproof jacket/coat could be rolled up and put in a bag or rucksack if the weather is dry (or mild even!!)
Rain boots? hmmm... sounds extreme - just good shoes or boots (not sandals or light shoes) should do

For goodness sakes. Your going to a city not a sheep farm. It's winter, dress for it. Not a big deal, if it pours go to a museum or just a shower, wear a hat.

We don't have a climate in England just weather. It can do anything in December, mild, dry, rainy, foggy and yes it does snow, although early December is a little early to expect any.

Typical weather that time of the year will be damp, misty, about 7-9 degrees C. I would definately recommend waterproof boots. Trainers get very wet walking around all day. Also take a light waterproof mac, Kagool whatever you call them that can be taken off when inside.

the good thing about London is that there is loads to see and do indoors if the weather is bad. I particularly like the Imperial war museum, St paul's cathedral and the dungeon.

I don't know if it's because I grew up in Northern Finland, but when I lived in London, I thought the weather in the winter was fantastic! Most of the time it was quite warm, and there were lots of sunny or partly cloudy days. I think people tend to exaggerate the amount of rain in London. I don't think it rains considerably more than in, say, Paris, or any other Western or Central European city for that matter. Most of the time (but not all the time) the rain didn't last very long nor did it rain that hard. If it looked very likely it would rain, I would just take my umbrella and I was fine. Never got soaked or anything. :)
