I'm traveling w/business to Sioux Falls and have always wanted to visit Mt. Rushmore so am considering a trek to Rapid City and flying back to NC from there... any suggestion on best way to make the trek - rental car or is there a regular tour bus line??

I would rent a vehicle. Guessing you won't have more than a day or so. Take the time to drive through Bear Country just outside of Rapid City. Go on to Mt. Rushmore, it is $10 to park there. Coming back down take the Needle's highway. It does have a cost to it, but worth it, as long as you are not afraid of heights. It was fun for me because I like those kinds of things. There are areas where you have to drive through the rocks and it is a one lane hwy through it. Much of the drive is about 35 mph, so allow extra time. You can go through Mammoth Hot Springs and head back to Sioux City. :)

It is an all day drive from Sioux Falls to Rapid City. If you have a preference and short on time Fly and then rent a car since it is about a 1/2 hr drive to Mt Rushmore. I live in northeastern SD and it takes me six hrs to get to Rapid City. And 4 hrs to get to Sioux Falls.
