Longyearbyen How to get to Longyearbyen?
Posted: Mon January 12, 2004 06:45 PM UTC
Hi, we are planning a travel to Norway this summer.
We vould like to go to Spitzbergas/Svalbard.

I searched the net for available flights or ferry routes, but i did not succeded.

My question is: can someone tell where can I find an acceptable (cheap) way of getting to Svalbard?
(We are 2 young hungarians, flying with SAS for 10.000 NOK is not so good)...

The very best thing would be to go there by a ferry.
Or is it reserved just for millionaires....?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Hi Koadam.
There are no boats to Longyearbyen except for maybe some freight ships and some research ships.
But there is still hope for you :)
The 1. of april the Low-Cost Norwegian airline named, yes Norwegian will start up flights to Svalbard from Tromsų.
Norwegian got flights from Budapest to Oslo. Then Oslo - Tromsų. Then Tromsų - Svalbard.

Price List:
Budapest - Oslo (Round Trip) 1300 NOK
Oslo - Tromsų (Round Trip) 910 NOK
Tromsų - Svalbard (Round Trip) 1430 NOK

This is just a fast search i did on Norwegian.no
Check out this page. Maybe you can get it cheaper.

There are no cheap ways to get there. No regular ferries but several cruiseships go to Svalbard in the summer, all of them expensive. It's also rather costly to be there -food, accommodation and tours out of Longyearbyen.

Many people use Frequent Flyers Point with SAS for the ticket.

Well, thanks for your answer.

Sad news....
We (me and my girlfriend) had the dream for years, to go to the North, as far as we can go.
A few years ago, we were hiking in Finland and Norway . At that time, that was the Big Adventure for us (hiking from Helsinki to the Barent Sea). This year we planned to do it again, but ending the road at the Spitzbergas.

But, as I see at the moment , this is not so easy for two young people (money you know). 1-2-3-4 thousand dollars for a ship course is very-very much.
We thought there are regular ferry routes, or something like that.

So, now we review our plans, maybe we could achieve somehow what we planned.

If you have more information and tips on getting to Svalbard, please let me know.

bye
Koadam

I know the airline Braathens flies there several times a week.. but don't think they will be cheaper than what you already read here..

I have just looked on the SAS airline website and a return flight from Amsterdam to Longyearbyen (changing in Oslo) for the August 2006 period is:
464.23 Euro inclusive price.

The price return from Oslo to Longyearbyen is: 314.88 Euro inclusive.

This should give you some idea of price.

Look here: http://www.scandinavian.net/
