Bali here I come !
Posted: Fri January 9, 2004 03:28 PM UTC
Well despite the recent earthquake...I am still packing my stuff and heading to Bali this Jan 30 to Feb 3 and would be glad if someone can tell me some of the followings -

1) Is there any festival or celebration during that time ?
If there is which part or Bali and which temple ?

2) What are the famous authentic Balinese cuisine
that we should look out for ( besides seafood in
Jimbaran ) ???

3) Because I am planning to take a local tour
package to places like Besakih , Tanah Lot,
Kintamani - any suggestion of reliable local travel
operator ? ( we will probably stay in Bali Dynasty
Hotel ) ..any comments on the Hotel ?

4) How much does it cost ( taxi ) to go to Uluwatu ?
I have seen the pic of beautiful cliff and temple
there ...what else is there that I should look out
for ? any good restaurant there ?

Thank you

Why not rent a car to travel around in Bali ? That's a good option. If not, have a look on my Bali-page and you'll find a very reliable taxi-driver. Give him a call to discuss prices. There are also Panorama Tours and Gray Line in Sanur for bus guided tours and there is Steven Van Lierde who can offer you more private tours. i tried them out and they are all really good.
As Bali is the land of the Gods, there is always some ceremony going on somewhere. You come accross while travelling around.
For festivals in Bali check out the several Bali-pages (via Google) Some of them have an updated calendar.
As Norali said, (thanks Norali) have a look on my Bali page and you'll find a lot of tips for trips.
I wish you nice travelling through paradise.

renting a car

i agree with the above response about renting a car. everything in bali is so spread apart. it`s really not so convenient without a car. a friend of mine drove me around everywhere...lucky me. i don`t know what i would have done if she didn`t host me.
the food in bali was delicious! you have to try nasi goreng, nasi jenggo, nasi campur (all rice dishes) & mie goreng (noodles). indonesian food is rather spicy (the sambal) so if you can`t take alot of spicyness then ask the preparers to put the sambal on the side.
if you decide to go to tanah lot temple, there are some ladies right outside the entrance selling a sweet with palm sugar & coconut. it`s sooooooo delicious, you have to try it!

dear VT frens ,

thanks for the advice on renting cars ..but I remember reading a few advice or tips under the Bali tips that driving in Bali is not encourage due to the frequent accidents and road conditions there ...how true is that ?

Well as for the food ,I am looking for something which is special and distinctive from the region , becos I come from Malaysia so ...my naughty taste buds are looking for different ...something that I cannot find in Malaysia ..as for chilli or sambal ...the more the better ...huh ...I am a super chili-sambal fan ....( there was once when I ate so much chilli that I couldnt stand but curled up on the floor ...gosh ...a lesson learned ..but still luv them )

Would love to hear about different Balinese dishes that we should look out for ...btw how much is teh fare from say Kuta / Denpasar to Uluwatu ?

Once again thanks

renting a car

actually that`s true about renting cars. there are no real traffic rules in bali. the drivers there would rather die than stop for you or let you pass. i`m not kidding. and the police, they are not much help, according to my indonesian friend. if you get into an accident you`ll have to bribe them. there is alot of bribing in indonesia, unfortunately.

I have travelled to Bali twice, and there is no way that I would hire my own car, unless I had a death wish. It is very unsafe for the driver who tries to follow road rules of any discription.

As for going on tours, the best bet you can have is to decide where you want to go, and organise it thru your hotel when you get there, you may find that someone working at the hotel, has a brother, (no doubt his name with be wayan) and will do you a good deal and will take you to places a bit out of the way, well further than a normal tour would.

Now food, one of the best places to eat in Bali is Poppies restaurant on Poppies Lane 1, there is also a mexican restaurant around there somewhere too, best mexican i have ever eaten. But dont be scared to eat at anywhere that you may consider to be dodgy, these are sometimes the best meals you will ever eat, and will give you an idea of the real Balinese Culture. You can expect to have a 3 course meal and drinks for less than 10AUD.
Good luck and have a great holiday, I reckon when you get there, you wont be staying for long enough!!
