learning English in Malta - language holidays? Posted: Fri January 9, 2004 08:16 AM UTC
Hi everyone around Malta, can someone give a hint about language travel holidays in Malta? My wife wants to spend about a week or two in summer 2004 in Malta to improve her English. Are there any guided holidays? Is there a chance for something like a short term (au-pair) stay in a Maltesan family?

Hi Luke
I was in Malta in November 2003. Almost everyone there speaks English ( and pretty well) and I noticed that there were lots of "english" schools. All the guided tours were done in English and other languages. Since it is a big British destination..there seems to be no lack of English language usage there, they even call the currency there Pound.
Summer is really peak holiday season there for English speaking tourists so I am sure she will not lack the use of the language.

Good for you. Malta is great and the people have amazingly clung to their own language and traditions. - despite colonisation and myriads of tourists.
Apart from a few of the older generation almost evryone speaks English - with a sort of Welsh accent (a rising inflection on the final syllable). Your last reply sounds very helpful and I wish you much success.

I was in Malta last year and the place was full of language students. It was a bit of a nuisance at first especially if we got the bus at the wrong time. I think they believed that they owned the island and I felt a bit sorry for the locals, who I love!

Hi, thanks for answering. How was your accomodation? Were you in a hotel, or in a guest family? How was your experience? Is the accomodation - whatever it is- more European, let's say British or is there sort of a unique Maltesan lifestyle, comparable to Europe?

hi der. i hope i can be of some help. i work with an english school as a group leader ie. im incharge of taking students to activities as well as explaining to them about their stay and anything they require. there are two main courses you can choose. either the teen course or the adult one. each course doesnt just contain a certain amount of hours of lessons with the whole class but there are also lessons where the student has a lesson with his teacher only which we call intensive lessons. each program has its own activities which the students can attend to after their lessons.the program for the teens and adults is different according to which program you book and each is designed to please accordingly.it explains about the courses & also accomodation besides other things.should you require more info dont hesitate to contact me. regarding what someone said about "making malta as if it was their own" well i wouldnt quite agree. i think its just that there are so much of them that you might feel invaded if you want to call it so altough its realy not the appropiate word and contrary to what people might think about them its just a joy to be with them in summer and only one can say after working with them. but thats based on my experiences. and another side point if it wasnt for them to fill up the bars in pv in summer it would be very boaring it would be like winter and when theyre around the bars the atmosphere is always so lively.i dont think anyone can deny this not to mention the money they spend their. this is the web site of the school where i work www.esemalta.com

Hi Roger,
thanks a lot for caring so much about my travelling plans. Well, things hgave changed in the meantime. Regarding your extended answer to my question, I am sq2uite sorry for you. Well, I'vre decided to change to thew "mother - country" of Englis, which is still Great Britain. So, the language Travel will go to Bournemouth in the UK. However, during my preparations for that trip I collected lots of interesting things about Malta. Now I know its worth travelling there. And who knows, where my next tripos will go to ........
