Cairo during Ramadan
Posted: Tue July 20, 2010 08:01 PM UTC
Hello!

I'm going to be traveling for a couple of days in Cairo during August. It being Ramadan, I understand that many shops, restaurants and public transportation may be unavailable during the daytime.

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on how to move about the city, eat out and explore with these restrictions? Will it be necessary to stockpile snacks for the day until the city awakens after sunset?

Thanks for your help :)

I haven't experienced Cairo during ramadan, so this is conjectural. I wouldn't worry unduly, the city won't grind to a total standstll. There is, after all, a substntial Coptic Christian minority. You don't need to worry about buses: you'd have to be very hardened to use Cairo buses. Very crowded and they don't appear to use bus stops: they just slow down a bit. Taxis will still be about.

When Egyptians can earn money they will be open to earn money!! Ramadan or not! They will just not eat or drink or smoke.

And they would respect you if you honour them for that efford and not bring them into temptation by eating, drinking or smoking in front of them.

Most restaurants orientated on tourists will be open.

Hello

I traveled in Egypt during Ramadan two years ago and it was a little challenging at first. I then met with a registered tour guide named Abdo. Seeing as he was Muslim himself, he was a great help and it didn't even feel like I was restricted. He was a smart young man who knew his country and its history.

I have his contact details for you here:
Abdo El Lahamy e:mail abdo_eljoker@yahoo.com celphone:002-012-198-4431

hi,
I will be here in Cairo this Ramadan too.
i'm sure you will find some places to dine.
( for sure at hotels).
but do take care of what you wear by day time..
Ramadan is about refraining from food as well as any sexual contact from sun rise to sun set..so make sure your clothes is modest and not revealing.
This Ramadan the sunset will be around 8 PM.
P.S. Ramadan breakfast is a feast..so prepare yourself if you will join any of your Muslim friends..by eating very little at day time.
best wishes.

As LongTone says there are quite a few Coptic Christians in Egypt so they will still be operating their businesses. These are the guys who are allowed to serve you alcohol. As Dora says, many business will still be open but the owners will keep to the fasting rules. It is respectful not to eat or drink in front of them. Some government offices may have restricted hours but this shouldn't concern you.

Groceries still sell food and drinks during Ramadan. So there's no need to worry. It is just where to find a discreet place to eat if not in your hotel.
