Can you recommend me a hostel in downtown Glasgow? A good one. Or a guest house. It does not need to be bottome end. Something nice, cosy with attractive price.

What is your idea of an attractive price?
How many people? Sharing rooms?
When? How long?
What do you mean by "downtown" ? Business area? Tourist area?
What facilities are essential? Room only? B/B?

Colin,
Glasgow

Colin,
I need the private twin room (I am sharing it with my colleague) from August, 14 to August, 20.
Location: turist area, where most of the pubs are located. But it must be conveniently located according to SECC. It means, easy to grab a rail or a tube to get to the conference centre.
Price: not more than 30 pounds per person per night. Breakfast is preferable.

The area you probably want is the west end - lots of pubs, walking distance to secc and 10min bus/metro ride to the centre of town

Try

http://search.visitscotland.com

and then type in Glasgow - lots of under £30 to chose from. Full details on the website.

Bear in mind that the Edinburgh festival will be on during August - the world's biggest arts festival and is absolutely amazing. Edinburgh is only a 45 min train journey away and then 10mins by metro to the secc. If you decide to stay in Edinburgh book early.

NB Hostels over here usually mean youth hostals and involve bunk beds and lots of people per room. Best look under bed and breakfasts.

Leok is partly right.
The area you want is the West End (where I live}.
He is also right that you should get a good B/B for the price and that hostels can be pretty dreary.
There is no metro to SECC but there is a train which is sometimes underground.
Edinburgh will be a lot dearer at that time because of the Festival.
I suggest you reverse his advice, i.e. stay in Glasgow and go to Edinburgh for the day when (if) you want.
I am going to Spain tomorrow till next Tuesday but will get back to you then if you want.
If you find a place on the web, let me know before you book and I'll tell you if the location etc. is good.
Otherwise I'll make some suggestions.
Colin

Leok,
I have found the following ho(s)tels:
Charing cross guest house,
The heritage hotel,
Chez nous house
Kelvin hotel guest house
Hillhead hotel
Kelvin Park Lorne Hotel

Which one would you recommend taking into acount my preferences (lively area and easy to go to SECC)?
Thanks a lot.

Most should be fine - from a quick flick thru the web the Kelvin hotel guest house and the Hillhead hotel look the best.

I booked my mother into the Kelvin hotel a couple of years ago and she enjoyed the stay - nice views and the owner specially prepared porridge for her overnight after she mentioned she liked it. Nothing fancy about the room but as a basic base in the right spot it was pretty good - you are also 2 mins away from the Botanic gardens which are lovely if the sun's out.

Don't really know much about the others except that the Charing Cross and Kelvin Park Lorne both seem a little off location - there are also bad reviews of Kelvin Lorne on tripadvisor's site so probably worth keeping well clear.

All are walking distance (prob 15-20mins) from SECC or a quick taxi ride. For maps try going onto www.mapblast.co.uk

The postcode of the SECC is G3 8YW.

The road with most bars on it is Byers road and a small lane behind it called Ashton Lane. To get into town where all the other action is you are a 10min metro ride away with a metro stop halfway done Byers road.
