| Northumberland | Various tips Posted: Tue January 6, 2004 12:52 PM UTC
Hubby and I have plans to see Northumberland too next time we visit family in Lincolnshire. None of us can drive so we wonder if it is possible to leave the mainline and main roads by bus/coach too between places other than major towns? Any good link to county transport?
Things we have in mind are: Alnwick - a must since brother-in-law had a shop there once and I want to see the castle. Bamburgh - a must for an Ivanhoe fan who loves beaches Lindisfarne - well I'm Scandinavian...hehe Hadrians Wall - how and where by bus to still see an interesting part? Anything else we "must" do? We plan to go around Easter. Any special events? Closing days (hubby feels more Swedish than English these days)? |

Haven't found anything for Easter yet but this one in June looks quite nice.

You can certainly get a train to Morpeth (its in that neck of the woods) or somewhere around the area from Newcastle. If you want to visit the castles there maybe bus tours available, but i am not sure from where.
I am guessing, but i dont think it will be that easy without a car, as they are fairly remote places. You could cycle between the castles, which is a great journey! And you could probably do that in a day, or maybe two if you stay at a campsite. Saying that the wall maybe a little far for that. If im wrong, someone will put you right.

Hi Charlotta - www.traveline.org.uk allegedly gives comprehensive bus info for around the UK. Some bus companies use its services rather than publish on their own sites. I've never used it myself, but it's probably worth a try.
Hadrian's Wall is pretty easy to get to by bus from both ends, as far as I know. I have taken day trips by train from Glasgow to Carlisle, taking the bus out to Housesteads Fort on the wall - you should be able to do similar from the eastern end. Have a look at www.hadrians-wall.org ps the Antonine Wall is the real final Roman frontier and runs just a few kms from my house :)

Great tips you two!!! I'll check both Morpeth and bus site. Keith would love to bike it as he is a bike touring type, but Alice is five and just too old for a bike seat at the back and still too young to bike in traffic herself....-(
