Ah! In that case, you really want to stay at the Hyatt Regency, unless you have a car and want to drive around.
The Hyatt is off by itself off the western edge of downtown. During the day, it's a short walk to Union Station via an underground passage, and from Union Station up through Dealey Plaza to the West End, but there are few hotels in an easy walking distance.
Note that once you are at Union Station, there is not only the light rail service (see www.dart.org), but also the TRE (the train that goes to Ft. Worth - note: runs only 6 days a week (not Sunday)). This station also has Amtrak traffic but currently that's only 1 or 2 trains a day.
Without a car, you can take DART to a variety of places in Dallas: the West End (although during the day, you might as well walk), the Dallas World Aquarium, the Arts District (Dallas Museum of Art, Crow Museum of Asian Art, etc.), the Cathedral of the Virgin of Guadelupe (Roman Catholic), North Park (first enclosed shopping mall in the US and still the home to Neiman Marcus - although the original Neimans is still downtown)...and to the Dallas Zoo in the other direction.
I guess I've stayed in a room at the Hyatt (I live here so not much need), but it's a business hotel, so it's not a dump. The restaurant at the top of the tower next door has been totally overhauled (I've not been up there since the re-do), and while it's sure to be pricey, if the restaurant still rotates, it's worth the view for one meal...see http://dallasregency.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/entertainment/restaurants/index.jsp
So, what's the next question?
P.S. if you really want an adventure, and time is not of the essence, get down to Boston and take Amtrak in two stages: Boston to Chicago (overnight), and then Chicago to Dallas (again, overnight). Yeah, It'll take 48 hours or so, but you're see lots of scenery without the wear and tear of driving ;-)
