Hi Sonya,
This summer many friends of mine spent their holidays in Abkhazia. It is really great place, cheap and very friendly to tourists. I was in Sochi this year, but we did not go to Abkhazia as standard tour by bus takes more than 8 h (mostly by mountain roads). We were not very encouraged to do it with a child. May be next time. It is a great country - last time I was there at the age of 10 and have only good memories ;-)))
For Russians border is open (except spending 30-40 min in a que to pass, just to show a passport), not like for other Geargian territory where we need a visa. Tourist busses pass the border separetely, spending less time at the control. As for foreigners, I am not sure but if you take a tour from Sochi, you need not any visa - business is above all ;-) ,but if you will try to cross border by youself - they will stop you.
