Abkhazia [provisional] Travel Forum

According to a documentary on TV this seems to be a lovely strech of land on the Black Sea coast. Does anyone know whether one can go there from Sochi as there seems to be a train but is it an official border crossing and would one need a Georgian visa?

This summer many friends of mine spent their holidays in Abkhazia. It is really great place, cheap and very friendly to tourists. I was in Sochi this year, but we did not go to Abkhazia as standard tour by bus takes more than 8 h (mostly by mountain roads). We were not very encouraged to do it with a child. May be next time. It is a great country - last time I was there at the age of 10 and have only good memories ;-)))

For Russians border is open (except spending 30-40 min in a que to pass, just to show a passport), not like for other Geargian territory where we need a visa. Tourist busses pass the border separetely, spending less time at the control.
As for foreigners, I am not sure but if you take a tour from Sochi, you need not any visa - business is above all ;-) ,but if you will try to cross border by youself - they will stop you.

It is interesting that at all tourist sites there is an info only for Russian tourists like here:

One more interesting information that I've found on sites of Abkhazia.

There are only 5 Abkhazian ambassadors across the world, in:
Russia, Germany, China, Taiwan and Turkey.
So, those states unofficially recognise its independence.
