| Grand Bahama Island | old bahama bay - any comments Posted: Sat January 3, 2004 12:22 PM UTC
I am due to stay there late in January in one of their newly built rooms. Because they are so new they only have artists impressions on their web site - anyone stayed and got first hand experience of the rooms or the hotel for that matter. I am looking for a total relax, so hope to find this too. I will also be travelling with my wife and one year old son - any tips here? What will the weather be like? - we are travelling from England via New York for five days, where the weather will be really really cold - I want to pack light for the Bahama part of the trip, but dont want to stand out as having too few suitable clothes - Help?

Old Bahama Bay is a motel/marina complex at West End on Grand Bahama Island. I have only stayed there in the marina waiting for good weather to go back to the States (have to have a south wind to cross the Gulf Stream). We were there in March 2002, and I have only a few photos of the area on my West End page - mostly of the marina.
The place is very isolated - takes a half an hour to get to Freeport and there is nothing there except the hotel, marina, and a restaurant. The marina has a pool and there are trails and places to snorkel, but if you can relax and do nothing, this will be relaxing for you because there's little else to do. West End is fairly far north in the Bahamas, so the weather will be about the same as at Ft. Pierce or Palm Beach. It can be really hot during the day but is usually cool at night, and may be cool and rainy. The water will probably also be cool depending on what you are used to. Floridians think it is too cold to swim at that time of year - New Englanders think they are wimps and swim anyway. http://www.grand-bahama.com/faqclimate.htm says "Temperatures average 70-75°F degrees during the winter season" Summary for Freeport MONTH Jan TEMPERATURE (F) Avg Daily 69.0 Avg Max 75.8 MAX 84-1997 Avg Min 61.2 MIN 39-1977 Dew Pt. 60.0 RH % 7.2 RAINFALL (Ins) # 2.67 RAIN DAYS 9 SUNSHINE (Hours) 6.8 WIND Direction NE Wind Speed (kts) 8.5 Light clothes take much less space than winter clothes so I would not worry about taking the minimum. Everything indoors will be air conditioned or cool enough to wear heavier clothes. I do not know about the resort part clothing requirements - the restaurant looked fairly upscale (i.e. real tableware, glasses and tablecloths), but they seated us scruffy yachties anyway.

Hi , I can't tell you anything about the resort you are going to, but I can tell you about the weather. We just got back and it was about 25 to 28 degrees celsius. At night though it went anywhere from 21 to would you believe 12 one night. It can get quite breezy also at this time of year. I just packed normal clothes for the heat, but also took a sweater and light jacket for the evenings. Don't forget they don't turn off the air conditioning in the restaurants etc., so after the heat of the day you can feel quite chilly. We had marvellous days by the pool, but never once needed the air on in our room at night.
