The seven ones.... SCOTLAND!
Posted: Wed June 2, 2010 12:28 AM UTC
Hello Everyone,

This is Jeff from Texas. I'm coming to your land this summer and one thing I always try to do is get educated on the local scene before arriving: what I call 'the seven ones'. Just one answer for all or any of the below - your favorites – for Scotland.

-1 Book... something that 'moves' not too historical or dry.

-1 Song... any Scottish classics or modern hits that I could find on iTunes or otherwise.

-1 Drink... what the locals drink.

-1 Dish... a local, ancient meal or food.

-1 Word/Phrase... greeting, or something unique.

-1 bit of news... what is going on in Scotland. Local/national items that have been in the news.

-1 little place... a place off the path where one can get a real feel for the culture (small town, NOT Loch Ness, Edinbugh Castle etc.)

I'll compile the list and post at the end of this thread or possibly comment after the trip.

Cheers!

Jeff.

You may know this, Jeff, but we use "bookmark" here to be notified of responses to the question. As we are going to Scotland in August, I will be very interested in what suggestions and information you receive. So I am piggybacking on your post. Thanks.

Hre's my compilation.

Book: Kidnapped, by R.L. Stevenson
Song: Loch Lomond. You will find several versions on YouTube, here's one I like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7hxLH4Ec-A
Dish: Cullen skink
Phrase: Cead mile failte

For the two last items you'll need help from someone who lives there.

I like Glenfiddich very much.

If you prefer something with a sweeter taste than whisky, a drink that is little known outside Scotland is Dunkeld Atholl Brose, a liqueur made with whisky and herbs.

Book: The Stornoway Way by Kevin MacNeil. A very funny and moving book, and appropriate if you're heading to Stornoway!

Song: Julie Fowlis - Hug air a' bhonaid mhoir (from her album Cuilidh).
Bonus song(s): Dick Gaughan's album Handful of earth is a bit of a classic.

Dish (possibly to avoid): Deep-fried Mars bar.

1. Depends where you are going but perhaps Lillian Beckwith's series of books, one of which is "The Hills in Lonely".
2. Ditto but try "Song of the Clyde" or "Flower of Scotland" (Scotland's 'other' national anthem)
3. Scots are a pretty international bunch, so they drink anything. Perhaps try the water.
4. Atholl Brose, porridge, kippers, haggis, clootie dumpling, Arbroath smokies.
5. Hello! Terrible day! - don't even try anything in Gaelic....
6. Try Google
7. ? Depends on your itinerary

<<<-1 Drink

Not just Whisky, but single malt whisky. Be sure to visit at least one distillery to get a better understanding of this ancient art :-)
If you want one a bit out of the way, try to visit the town of Tobermory on the isle of Mull (just north of Oban), and try the local single malt. Or even better, go to the Orkneys and at Kirkwall try the famous Highland Park single malt

FINDHORN BAY! Beautiful little fishing village, gorgeous beach for walking, fantastic sea-side pubs and fresh seafood :-) I go there every summer.

-Modern Songs... Amy MacDonald, This is the Life: www.amymacdonald.co.uk/
Another great item for the iPod: the Red Hot Chilli Pipers: www.redhotchillipipers.co.uk/

-1 Drink...
How about some real Scottish Ales... like Sheep Shaggers Gold, Nessie's Monster Mash, Red McGregor: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1e5c4a/

-1 bit of news...
The Inverness Courier: Concern at lack of Nessie sightings in 2009:
http://www.inverness-courier.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/11343/Concern_at_lack_of_Nessie_sightings_in_2009.html/

(will be in Scotland end of July... wopeeeh!)
Have a great trip.

Thank you. For some reason the 'clootie dumpling' sounds scarier than a deep-fried mars bar! One point: I don't actually like to know what is in these things typically (so don't give it away)... :)

Bruce: the Titanic news is epic! Cheers! Can you tell me what "Cead mile failte" means? Does it mean one hundred thousand welcomes? You seem to be very knowledgeable on these things.
Jeff.

I'm a bit late on this thread but try the countryside around Biggar in the borders - and a clootie dumpling is a pudding cooked in a cloth (like a plum pudding)

Thank you for the compliment about being knowledgeable - I'll try not to let you down too soon. "Ceud mile failte" means 100,0000 welcomes. The "cead" spelling is Irish. Other useful(useless?)information: Whisky is the Scottish spelling, Whiskey the Irish. This is a general rule, as I believe there are some exceptions. I'm enjoying all the answers you're getting. Book Game of Kings - Dorothy Dunnet

Drink - Oban is a great single malt...as is Highland Park. If you really want to "taste the Peat" LAPHROAIG from the Island of Islay.

Anyone have any info on Stromness, Orkney?

http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&q=stromness+scotland&fb=1&gl=us&ei=hSoHTLXYGpD8zAT1naijDg&ved=0CBUQpQY&hl=en&view=map&geocode=FTWxgwMdi6jN_w&split=0&sll=58.967801,-3.281824&sspn=0.030317,0.060458&hq=&hnear=Stromness,+Orkney,+United+Kingdom&ll=59.28272,-1.94458&spn=3.036406,7.086182&z=7&iwloc=A

We are considering heading up there to get 'off path'. Specifically, how long would it take to get from Inverness, across on a ferry (if you timed it right) and to STRN? Any other information would also be helpful.

It's about 4-5 hours (longer if you do it by sailboat like me hehe)
And you pass through Kirkwall and the distillery of the famous Highland Park!

Book - Trainspotting (Can't help it - based In Edinburgh where I am from)

Song - Anything by Paolo Nutellui (good Scottish Lad - great for the Ipod - modern!)

Drink - My tipple of choice would be a nice glass of Glayva (my absolute favourite!)

Dish - Stovies (potatoes, corned beef, onions) served with beetroot and bread, some make it with sausages instead, other dish, Haggis, neeps and tatties and remember some Scottish Fudge - yummy!

Word or phrase - cannae (Can not), Ken (Know), Mind (remember), dinnae (Don't), you tube (you idiot)

As for news - just have a look on newsnow.co.uk and keep up to date

To get a real feel of the culture of Scotland, take a trip to Crammond (Edinbugh), then get the little boat over the water and wander up to Dalmeny House.

@peppermint: Do you by any chance mean Paolo Nutini? http://www.paolonutini.com/promo.htm <- this one?

I can't believe I forgot to mention my favourite whisky: Dalwhinnie Single Malt. Nomnom :D

Ands a bonus-thing-you-didn't-ask-for-at-all: the Scottish sitcom Still Game is hilarious. It's about a bunch of pensioners in Glasgow and their antics, I know that doesn't sound too exciting, but give it a try! Most of it seems to be on Youtube.
