Which metro station is better?
Posted: Thu May 27, 2010 03:15 PM UTC
Hi all,
Thanks again for your previous comments on other questions, they were really helpful.

I have already chosen my hotel: Best Western Ilisia Hotel / 25 Mihalakopoulou St.

My plane arrives at 16.30, so I plan to take the metro and get off in
Evangelismos and walk to the Hotel (some 200 mts away).

My question is: Is Evangelismos surroundings safe to walk from there?
( I saw there is a kind of big avenue or high-way nearby)

Or is it better to get off in Megaro Moussikis and have a longer walk,
but a safer neighbourhood?

Cheers and thanks again for all your help!!!

Carlos.-

Evangelismos is OK, no problem at all. Normally you will arrive around the end of the day, but still daylight. Don't worry.

i was in athens a few months ago for a convention and during my free time i roamed around the city quite frequently. Evangelismos seemed safe to me and the area around it looked really posh. generally my experience was wonderful. i loved the city and i actually had a great time during the convention because we had the assistance of the athens convention bureau. check them out www.facebook.com/athensconvention they showed us a great time around athens, in just a few days i saw so many parts of the city.

Evagelismos is the best metro stop as Stefanos stated, but I wonder why again and again all you people ask about safety in Athens.
Of course it is safe. All these gossip you hear over the news is done purposely to harm Greece. I hate it when I hear that Athens is not a safe city. It is ridiculour! All these bad comments posted is to make visitors think that they are in an unsafe country, and make them go to other destinations.

From Evagelismos it is just a 5 - 7 minute walk. I am sure you will have a great time in Athens my friend, and don't you worry at all.
Enjoy your stay here

Popi, every city has some areas that are not safe, or not as safe as others, and it has nothing to do with the recent events or the economic situation. I think that Carlos just wants to be sure he won't be walking along one of these areas.
If you were coming to my city, I'd recommend you to avoid certain areas for your safety, although it is as safe as any other in Spain.

Dear Carlos, I read your message and wish to say this. Omonia and the surrounding areas are not safe at night because its full of drug traffickers and drug users. Yesterday 27/05/2010 and the day before yesterday 26/05/2010 there was a real fight with knives and swords between illegal immigrants for drug selling posts and it was in the news on TV. Just don't go to Omonia square and the surrounding areas. Inspector Gadjet

Just common sense: I dont think that a hotel of this level would be in a "not safe" area or in an area of "not safe" access.

Popi is absolutely right, expressing the feelings of all Greeks on this dirty propaganda against "safety" in Greece. Those who do not feel safe can simply stay home and watch TV instead of travelling. I have travelled in so many countries, mostly alone, and I had never experienced "safety" problems but once, in the meaning given in this discussion. This happened only once, in a country which is talking so much about "safety" and criticizes so much other countries about "safety" and want to "protect" the other countries. Sorry, I will not mention the country because they will claim that I am making dirty propaganda against them.

I am Greek, and I am proud of Greece being a SAFE country, just because people care for each other and help each other. In ancient Greece, travellers-foreigners were "God-sent", and Greek people today still honor this old tradition and point of view.

Although, remember that in any country a cat can steal your fish from your plate if you don't protect it.

Dear Stefanos,

I am Greek too and I live in the heart of Athens and I know what I am talking about. Omonia square and the surrounding areas are not safe during the day from foreign pick pockets from Romania, Albania and Bulgaria and at night from Drug traffickers and drug users. Omonia square and 3rd September road has become home to drug traffickers and drug users selling drugs in front of the police without being able to do nothing. Every night the police do scoop the area with no results. So many illegal immigrants and asylum seekers do live in Omonia and the surrounding areas causing allot of problems and the area is not safe anymore. I say what is happening in Omonia and the surrounding area. Thanks stefanos for your reply

@Inspector Gadget...I am a woman who has lived in Greece for the past 30 odd years. Last Monday night, I was in Athens for a book presentation and walked from the book store to the metro station in Omonia at around 10pm. The only trouble I saw, were the city workers cleaning the streets and pedestrian walk ways, which meant that my shoes got a bit wet!

If you are looking for trouble, you can always find it.

Greece may have its problems, as any large urban city has, but I've never felt unsafe, anywhere in Greece.
