gjirokastra to berat

Hello,

I'm planning a trip to Albania and was wondering if there is any public transport between Gjirokastra and Berat? Buses or furgons?
Public transport in general seems quite "challenging" in Albania. Anyone here who already toured around the country using buses/trains/furgons?

Thanks!

Hi, The man to consult for this is VT member Claus 'cachaseiro'.

Apparently Albanians are really friendly...

Have fun :-)

Albania can seem "challenging" because there is very little written information available about timetables, so it's not easy to make a precise plan from outside the country. But once you get there things aren't so bad at all, with a little bit of asking around you can usually find a way to get where you want to go. Just bear in mind that for long journeys its often necessary to start quite early in the morning.

Specifically about Gjirokastra and Berat, I visited both but I didn't travel directly between them - I can't remember if there was direct transport.

We did this in April 2010, leaving Gjirokastra at 13:00 or so. The taxi took us down the hill to the main road (400Leke) and introduced us to a furgon driver who took us to Berat (about 140 km, 3 hours) for 20 euro. Failing this, the Gjirokastra tourist office advised to take a furgon to Fier (frequent) and change for Berat there. Travel in Albania seemed a lot easier than appears in some guide books and the people are pretty helpful.

I dont know if this is helpful for you, but here is "some kind of" schedule for busses and minibusses in Albania. http://www.matinic.us/albania/furgon.php

Furthermore I would just advise you to ask the locals when you are there how to get from one place to another, the Albanians are very willing to help and very friendly people!
