10 Days I'm going to spend on Java.
Can you all please help me pointing out some places of interest on your pages.

We are looking for culture , nature , ....experiencing local live...
How is public transport over here?
Is the railway expensive and is it comfortable?

Are there nature reserves that are not to be missed?

Any information is usefull.

i visited yogyakarta in central java. borobudur & prambanan temples are close to there & in the city itself is a bird market & the sultan`s palace. quite an interesting stop for 2-3 days.
i took the train to yogya from bandung (executive class) & it was quite comfortable with alot of leg room. food is served as well. i got free breakfast & lunch on the train. wow!

Thanks. And how to calculate travelling time? Is it fast or rather slow?

there are stops along the way, of course, but executive class is the fastest (and w/ A/C). it took about 9 hrs from bandung to yogya. bandung is 4 hrs east of jakarta by car.

Definitely Yogyakarta as the above poster mentioned. Also Mt Bromo is nice. In eastern Java near Probiliggo. Took a train from Yogya to Jakarta about 7-8 hours i think. Overnight clean and cheap. Buses are good too but drivers can be a bit on the crazy side. A lot of nature reserves on Sumatra for orangutangs. Some good volcanos throughout Indonesia.

Hi Frank,
If you interest in animals perhaps you want to visit animals conservations in Ujung Kulon (West of Java island). You can see some animals from some species, the famous in there is 1 Horn Rhinoceros. Which the population is smaller now.The place also quiet beatiful & not far from there you can visit Tanjung Lesung beach.

Have a nice vacation,
Rini

I agree to Yogya, Borobudur, Prambanan and Bromo and if You are heading or coming from east Java, Kawah Ijen, a sulfur-crater-lake where sulfur is extracted (and carried downhill with "backpacks" by workers in thongs) is a very impressive thing to see. We went there with a tour, but I think it is accessible via Probolingo. Best time to go up is around sunrise.
