Possibly moving to Irkutsk
Posted: Fri November 8, 2002 11:44 AM UTC
I have been offered a potential contract extension, the catch is, the work would possibly be in Irkutsk instead of Moscow. I know that it is one of the most beautiful places in Russia, possibly the world. What I am curious about is any active VTers experiences living in or traveling to the Lake Baikal region. Would it be a place that you would be comfortable living for a year? I expect the cost of living might be high, as it is rather isolated. I would welcome any input from my fellow virtual travelers.

Hep,
Get in touch with Christine (VT tini58de) as she has been through that region and town before. She could probably give you some good tips.

It will be big difference in comparison with Moscow. Winters there are extremely cold, and they constanty report the problems with electricity may it is not that bad in Irkutsk, I don't know. Summer is fascinating...sand and pines..fantastic air, you will feel slight eiphoria breathing it..(at least in comparison with Moscow). The major entertaiments are somethimg like sightseeing, fishing, hunting saunas and so on. But you should cover long distances for that. Taiga is also fascinating you can step of the path and never find the road from the forest anymore. Obviously a lot of old and new jail places..so there are criminals. It couldn't be as expensive as Moscow..but all depends on how you can communicate with the people. There are plenty of educated people there, geologists and so on. They could be very helpful.

Hi Hep,

I have been to Irkutsk twice, but just as a tourist and only for a few days! I really liked this place a lot!
The city itself has quite a few beautiful sights, but the surrounding with Lake Baikal, Listvjanka and the Taiga is even more incredible!
I was there in March (boy, it does get really cold!!!!) and in September (when we sat outside on Lake Baikal with just a T-Shirt on!). You might want to have a look at my Irkutsk page, which is still not complete!!!!
Good luck to you!
Christine

Hello there. I actually made the same trip like christine in aug-sept and just went thru irkutsk. I personally thought its a nice city, a bit more expensive than other russian cities, but the streets are not very clean. People are abit friendlier than in the west side but its quite a nice city.
