Good local restaurant?
Posted: Thu December 25, 2003 09:50 AM UTC
Any local restaurant can be recommanded for traditional Chinese food (Cantonese food and also Dim Sin)?

The last time I visited a small restarant selling the dumpling (Wen Tun?) in Tsim Sha Tsui, which are delicious. And it is amazed that the restaurant already has a history of over 100yrs?!

Thanks!

there are lots of different kinds of chinese food: shanghai food, szechuan food, taiwan spicy hotpot, chiense vegetarian restaurants...

u may think that Jumbo floating restaurant in Aberdeen is a tourist restaurant but i am a hong kong local i still found it good.

local noodle stores can be very good too.
egg noodles with chicken wings, cubes of pig blood, pig skin, cow stomachs...etc
but u need a chinese to guide u since the storekeepers speak cantonese only.

food stores (Tai Pai Tong) in North Point Market Building are good too.
Find the one where many people are lining up or in which it is full of customers already.

anyway, when u see a lot of customers inside the local restaurants, u can just walk in and try. it should be good then.

don't walk into those restuarants in which there are few customers.

Maxim's Chinese Restaurant may be a good choice for Dim Sum and Yum Cha. Though I think it's not the best one, but at least the standard of and service could be guaranteed.
The problem of eating in Hong Kong may be too much choice to choose!

Hi Christina!
The best place in Tsim Sha Tsui for traditional Cantonese food is a restaurant called "Sweet Dynasty". This place is very popular with locals because of their amazing huge menu of dim sum, and their delicious desserts, which everyone says are the best in the world!

Go to their website and you'll see what I mean:

http://www.sweetdynasty.com.hk/

Also, I have a couple pics from my visit to the restaurant on my Kowloon page... Address is 88 Canton Road... I must say, the food was excellent and I liked the atmosphere too... You will have a great feast!

Wow, I am impressed of all VT members here. You all are so nice to provide the useful guideline for my travel to HK.

Ching, thanks. Don't worry since I can speak a few of Cantonese (though I have not spoken it for a few months but I think I will roll my tongue for this beautiful dialet).

Tang, Can you tell where that restaurant is? Or if I ask anyone on the street, they can tell right away?

Paul, I reviewed your travel page yesterday and already jot some useful info. from yours.

Thanks to all again and Wish a splendid new year!

You may click the following web site ( I suppose you can read Chinese)
http://www.maxims.com.hk
or there is one nearby Sogo Department Store in Causeway Bay. The address is 2/F Hennessy Centre (above Mitzuchozi Department Store). The telephone number is 2895 2200.

Sweet Dynasty may worth a try. However, it is too touristy for me and the 'taste' is adjusted quite a bit to suit non-chinese customers.
