Traveling from U.S. to Havana via Cancun
Posted: Thu April 1, 2010 06:46 PM UTC
A couple of questions:

Does anyone know of a way to purchase the air ticket from Cancun to Havana since Mexicana cannot take payment with a U.S. credit card?

If we bring U.S. dollars, will the banks change the money? Are we able to use an ATM machines while in Cuba?

The ATMs are also few and far between. You're pretty much best off taking cash to do this.

Even on bus stations walls around Cancun I've seen the fare posted for Havana. I imagine they sell plane tickets.

Hiya

First off ...
Best to take any currency but USD and Mexican Pesos to Cuba.
They have the worst exchange in Cuba. $1.08 USD to $1 CUC + 10% penalty because it's USD

US credit cards will not work in Cuba at a bank or ATM ... neither will a debit card from anywhere. Only a debit card with a visa logo on it will work (UK, world).
ATMs are not great and risk of losing the card is possible. They are rarely full of money.

Purchasing a ticket in Mexico ... your CC should work but a transaction record.

Is it because you're an American going to (off limits) Cuba the reason why Mexicana won't take your card? If so why would they fly you there? I'd think that they'd report you to the U.S. authorities. I used my U.S. issued card to buy a domestic ticket from Mexicana online.

Cash is king, but you can get a flight through a travel agency in Cancun, or the airport where you land with a credit card. When in Cuba, carry cash, an American citzen in Cuba is not allow except for journalist and teachers, doctors with permission so if you have no permission you should leave no evidence that you were there. Means, no ATM, NO stamp in passort. CASH is king, have it ready before you leave

Take Euros or Canadian dollars. As mentioned about leaving no trace...no stamp in passport, etc., also just pay for the ticket in Cancun in cash as opposed to with US card (if accepted for the ticket to Cuba.

Banks will change your money in Mexico. US credit or debit is a no go in Cuba.

Don't worry about the double entry to Mexico once you return to the US. From everything I know/read, its no big deal.

Have fun, everybody loves Cuba and its high on my list of next destinations.

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for replying. Mexicana is okay with booking the flight from Cancun to Havana but not from Los Angeles to Havana. However, they would not accept my U.S. Visa credit card.

I went to Cuba last year via Cancun. I bought my ticket at the Cancun airport from Mexicana and used my US credit card. I think your problem was trying to buy your ticket in the US. I took Canadian dollars with me and exchanged in Havana. Don't take US dollars. You will lose a lot more in fees. There are websites where you can purchase your tickets using US credit cards. They charge a fee of course but it might be worth it for you. Google US citizens traveling to Cuba. I used supertravelcuba.com to book a hotel.

Have fun. Cuba is awesome.

Actually, there is no law against a US citizen travelling to Cuba..only spending money(a technicality.) Mexicana will not take payment(to Cuba) via a US credit/debit/etc card as there will be a record of the transaction. They will NOT report you if you do the transaction in cash from Mexico. Mexico>Mexico they will accept. Take Euros as you will NOT be able to use any US based card. The USD exchange comes with extra fees. And Cuban customs will not stamp your passport. I would also suggest staying in Mexico at least 1 night so that there IS a record of your "need" to be in Mexico.

Are the prices at the Airport significantly higher than if we book them online in advance? Just wondering if we could just chance it at the airport when we get there? We're three British students travelling to Cuba in early August. Thanks
