Where to stay in Grindenwald / Interlaken / Zermatt?

Hello,
I have never been to Europe and being that my favorite thing to do is ski, Switzerland will be my first stop.
I will be meeting my girlfriend in the end of March in Geneva and we can either take a train from Geneva to Zermatt, Interlaken, or Grindenwald. I am looking for a place with intermediate skiing as well as a 'happening' town as we are young and would like to walk around town at night. I would prefer a ski on ski off accommodation but understand this will probably not happen.
I am looking to spend a reasonable amount (under $700) for the 3 nights (march 24th-march 27th). I would like a decent hotel that is located near the slopes or access to the slopes that is in town.
I'm not opposed to either Zermatt, Interlaken, or Grindenwald - it really comes down to the best area

Well I guess Interlaken would not be for you as it is far away from the slopes. You would have to drive up (train, car or bus) to one of the near by ski areas. From what you write I would recommend you Zermatt or even Saas Fee. You can choose a hotel close to the lift stations. As it is close to Easter there will be a lot of stuff going on in Zermatt/Saas Fee. Grindelwald it might not be sure if you can still ski down to the town by end of March. So you might have to take the train (Kleine Scheidegg) for the last bit or the gondolas (First). There is not that much going on in the evening as in Zermatt.

Check the site: myswitzerland.com also Zermatt. Zermatt boasts year round activities but hotel staff say it's busier in winter than any other year. There are lots of accommodations but you may have to make reservations very soon. Last year we stayed at Hotel Antika ($165 per day), just off main street. Request a room with the Matterhorn view, staff is very helpful, serves healthy bkfst, and walking distance to the nightlife,in fact there's a bar 3 doors down. The Grand Hotel (i think the name is Zermatterhof, escapes my memory) is right on main street but very expensive. I'll leave the comments on skiing to theskiers in this forum. Enjoy!

No doubt that Zermatt is the place #1 to ski!
Après ski & nightlife is more lively in Zermatt than Grindelwald. Verbier or Saas-Fee could be also be interesting alternatives.
You will find all info on the extensvie local website or on my VT pages ;-)
