Posted: Mon December 15, 2003 08:25 PM UTC
Hello.

Doesn't seem to be much interest in Samoa here, but I was wondering if anyone could help me out please?
Is cheap travel an option on this island? Can anyone give me a rough idea of cost forL:

1. Accomodation
2. Food
3. Beer
$. Transport

If anyone can help I will be very grateful.

Cheers.

Hello Zoonman,

Samoa, is paradise. And it does not have to cost much.
It is said to one of the least expensive destinations in the South Pacific.
You can get accomodation including meals at a nice beach fale on a perfect beach for aprox USD20. There are busses going around most places that does not cost much. Food and the local Vaimea beer is not expensive. You can of course stay at places like Agie Grey and other expensive resorts and have your meals in their expensive restaurants, but fancy hotels are available all over the world and if you first have the chance and are adaptable choose the inexpensive fales and get a taste of the Samoan way of life.

I've got lots of precious memories from my vistit to Samoa. So don't hesitate, book your flights, and I'll be glad to help if you have more questions.

You posted this query a long time ago... don't know if it's still relevant for you..but here goes anyway

Samoa is an absolute paradise and yes - cheap travel is definitely an option. The islands are very small and you can get around by hiring a vehicle or if you are a little braver you can catch the local buses for only a couple of dollars.

Their are several "tourist" type hotels and resorts dotted around which will set you back a bit - but it's far more fun to stay in one of the villages. Many villages offer accommodation and for around 10 dollars or so you can stay in a traditional "fale" (basically a roof on poles - the quality and level of luxury vary from village to village) literally right on the beach.

The locals are incredibly friendly and most of the time you can buy meals from them for only a few dollars.

It's very expensive to buy western style food and groceries as everything is imported. The cheapest option if to buy local food and In Apia there is a market where you can buy very cheap local produce and there is a fish market very early in the morning.

Same deal with beer. If you want the imported stuff it's going to cost you - but try the locally brewed "Vailima" - you can buy tall bottles in any road side shop for only a couple of dollars.

Essentially - live like the locals and you will have an amazing trip in this stunning country and it wont set you back much at all.

Samoa is a cheap destination.
For fales you pay 50Tala including 2 meals ! Groceries, food and fruit at the market are really cheap. Taxi in Apia is 3Tala. Busses are 3Tala. Ferry to Savaii is 9 Tala.

It was my cheapest and most beautifull destination so far.
