Am I going at a good time?
Posted: Mon February 1, 2010 02:38 PM UTC
It's a bit late now as Im travelling at the beginning of March but I wondered if anyone knew what the weather is likely to be like, eg sunny/rain/humidity etc. Im not sure what type of clothing to pack.

Im staying in Negombo but am travelling out and about to all the major tourist destinations.

Thanks

Yvonne

March April is best time to Visit Sri Lanka, its always cooler in the hill sides like kandy, sea sides are always hot and humid and occasional rain but in short burst. The temperature differs from 26.4 C to 27.8 C (One average 28-32C) Relative humidity is 70% during days while at nights it reaches 90%. Lowland country enjoys tropical climate.

I will be heading there again too in Feb March and I always stay in Negombo too.

Cotton is best for wearing and lots of sun screen lotion and mosqueto repalent. negombo is famous for giant size mosquetos.

You can check the weather pattern at www.meteo.gov.lk before you take your flight.

Hiya Yvonne, I'm sure the detailed advice (above) is excellent, and I think you'll have a fantastic time.

On what type of clothing to pack, make sure you have long trousers to tuck into your socks if you go to the forest in case of leeches - only joking!

Once again, have a great time and I look forward to hearing all about your trip when you get back.

Regards

Mark

Beginning of March will be mainly sunny with an occasional afternoon/shower. You can expect 7-8 hours of sunshine per day.

Sri Lanka has tropical climate, so humidity is always high. In March 65-70%.

Beware of the sun. UV-factor is 9+ year round, so a sun lotion with minimum SPF 20 - SPF 30 for fair skin - is recommended.

Pack light clothes - preferably cotton. Synthetic material just get sticky.

negombo is on the West, very close to the Airport and regret to inform you, you wont be able see any monkeys there, you have to go to Dambulla or Anuradhapura to see them and biger one are little aggresive and little ones are naughty.

I am not aware about finding the monkey at national parks mostly they focus on elephants. My visits to Sri Lanka are for business purpose and I had little time to visit these places, I have seen alot of Monkeys around the guest house I stayed at Anuradhapura and a little one keep following me as I offered him some peanuts.

Given below are the list of National parks in Sri Lanka with details and how to get there.

Monkeys

I'm no expert on monkeys but I don't think I've ever been there and not seen them - whole troops of them, admittedly I don’t remember them in Negombo but just about everywhere else. There were dozens of them a few weeks ago around Tissa, Kataragama and Yala, mostly in the wild but lots in the Kataragama Temple complex – eating the fruit people take to the Puja and around most of the Temples in the area

I’ve even seen them in the villages behind Aluthgama (e.g. Mudaligma and Bondapitiya) in the tress around the house and one of the biggest I ever saw was in Induruwa village, a ten minute walk in land from the beach.

So the chances are – you’ll see some monkeys.

Hiya again -

Leeches only inhabit certain areas - not Negombo or the coast generally, you’ve got to go inland and climb a bit. I can never tell whether or not I’m in leech country (unless I get them on me) but the local people you travel with will let you know, they don’t like them any more than we do. Don’t worry about leeches, I only mentioned them coz they came up (at length) in the forum.

As for mozzies, there is no big panic either but possibly more of a problem than leeches. Put not your trust in essential oils, balms, herbal potions or ‘magic’ bracelets, what you want long sleeves and trousers at night and repellent containing DEET on the bits you can’t cover.

Regards

Mark

Negombo is 35 km north of Colombo on the west coast - about 8 km from the airport.

You have a chance of seeing monkeys everywhere in Sri Lanka - except in the higher parts of the hill country. I have even seen monkeys in the parks in Colombo city. Remember they are wild animals, not pets.

You will most likely come across snake charmers in touristy places. They usually carry a small monkey with as well. If you want to take photos, be prepared to pay for that.

There are loads of monkeys in the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla) and Kandy. In most hotels there you should not leave anything on your balcony/veranda. It will be snatched by the monkeys.

Yes, there are monkeys in the national parks (Yala, Minneriya).

Oh, I'm envious...I would love to go back there someday. I agree about the monkeys--I saw them in many places. In Kandy, one stole my bag of souvenirs I'd just bought (I got it back once he figured out there was no food in it). I thought I had a picture of him on my travel pages, but maybe I didn't post that one (there is a lot of other info there, though, that could be useful to you).

Have a fantastic time!
