Going to Rio in a week!!!
Posted: Mon December 15, 2003 07:22 PM UTC
Hello. I will be in Rio from Dec. 21 to Dec. 30. I will be staying in a nice hotel in the Copacabana area. Unfortunately, I will not be travelling with anyone near my age group. Being a male college student, I want to experience the bars and clubs that I keep hearing about. Where should a lone person go to meet other travellers and/or Cariocas to make friends easily? Anyone hear travelling to Rio around the same time? I am a pretty experienced traveller and Rio is one of the few gems I have not been able to visit so I am very excited. I just don't want to have to hit the bars and the clubs by myself. Thanks.

Most of the bars and cafes are on Ave Atlantica but the type of girls who hang out here are highly undesirable even if they look desirable. Be VERY careful with them as any relationship can lead to endless problems. Dont give out email addresses. Its a heady place and easy to get caught up in the joie de vivre but take great care. Leave your watch and credit cards at home and never carry more than about $30 on you. Stay off the beaches after dark and away from poorly lit areas. Downtown is well worth a visit but take great care at weekends. There are many police in Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon now, so it is reasonably safe there if you take precautions. Dress down and try to look like a typical local. I´ve just come back to Chile from Rio after a month stay and the worst thing about it was the dreadful weather. It rained constantly!

I would read the club tips on this website. There are alot of good safe clubs to go to. Also ask the VT'r Mangueirese. She is well versed in this area!

Further to my earlier answer I forget to mention that virtually no one speaks English in Rio which leads to problems and often confusion.

No way . There are plenty of people who speak english or try to. You will be able to get by. The basics like I want. thankyou, your welcome, etc. learn this in bzl portuguese. the hotel staff must speak english. If you venture outside of copa it might be slight difficult. but there is always one carioca who is happy to help speak in english. have fun on your trip. you are going to have a blast. if you are gringo bring sun block. you are going to need it!

don't need to dress up fancy at the clubs. casual wear is good. but if you go to a club like Nuth you should wear cotton slacks and a nice shirt.

Further to Cariocagirls answer I lived in Rio for a six months and found virtually no one who spoke English. This included tourist guides, hotel front desk staff, cafe and bar waiters and of course taxi drivers. I accept there may be some people there who are fluent but I only came across 2 or 3 in my whole time there. It was my one big complaint about Rio and Brazil in general and led to more than a few problems and lost opportunities. Things may be different in Sal Paulo being a business district but not many tourists go there.

I with Jakartamike, he has got some good advice there. Clubbing in Rio is extremely popular, but NEVER let your guard down. Rio is one of the most incredible as well as dangerous cities in the world. There will be tons of people, foreign and brazilian, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Cariocas tend to be very friendly, as is the brazilian way, but be sharp. Get excited because Rio will not disappoint. If you are there for new years, make it to copacabana early, wow is that fantastic (but I missed it last year cause I was in Sao Paulo). As for language... some cariocas will speak some english, but not much. If you meet a brazilian friend that speaks english, you can use them to help you translate. If you need to say something in portuguese, just drop me an e-mail.
