Best travel guide

We will be honeymooning in Croatia and possibly Slovenia in June and July 2010. I am looking for recommendations on which travel guide to purchase. I've always liked Lonely Planet's guides and liked what I read in the book store. I also saw online that Moon Handbooks has a Croatia and Slovenia guide, has anyone used this particular guide? It would be convenient to have both countries in one book. We are travelling for 3 weeks, but aren't too sure where we're going yet. We have some places in mind, but are open to suggestions. I know Rick Steves has a book on Croatia and Slovenia as well, but honestly, I wasn't too impressed with it.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on these or any other guide books. Thanks for your help!

A driving trip from the North to the South will be very nice. I drove from Italy to Croatia, along the coast from the North right down South to Dubrovnik. I love Croatia. It was very nice. It will certainly make a good place for honeymoon with all the beautiful mediterranean town. We basically went sight seeing. I am not impressed with the beaches though. But we love the nature parks there. Fantastic. You must visit the national park!

For Croatia, we liked the Eyewitness travel guide, because it had a lot of pictures, so you could get a better idea of what you're going to see.

If you go to Croatia, make sure that you get to Dubrovnik, which is one of the most interesting towns in Europe. We've been to Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro. All three are very scenic and worth visiting.

Actually I was very unimpressed with the Lonely Planet book for Croatia when I used it for a vacation there in 2003. I thought it did a very poor job of covering the country--the whole book stuck way too close to the beaten path and barely mentioned anything that was outside the (narrowly defined) tourist zones. For instance, in Split, pretty much all LP did was describe Diocletian's palace and then completely ignore most of the rest of the city (including a giant park that was well worth visiting). Dubrovnik, which has a lot more to it than just the walled old city, got similar treatment. If you happened to want go outside these little zones, you were out of luck with Lonely Planet.

I am a big fan of the Rough Guide series. When I was in Croatia, there was no RG for the country, but maybe there is one now.

We have thought about renting a car in Croatia and travelling around that way, we're still unsure. I think we'll spend most of our time in Croatia, but have heard great things about Slovenia, especially the town of Bled. Lonely Planet has a new book on Croatia, I think it's from 2009. I found one by Rough Guides but it's a little older. Being a photographer, it's nice to have photos in the guide book so I have an idea whether or not it's worth visiting, especially photographing. I briefly read through LP's version and liked the info I read, but they certainly lacked photos.

Thanks again for all the help!

Definitely rent a car, especially in Slovenia. In Slovenia, you can stay in Ljubljana, and do day trips to the various sights (Piran, Bled, Lake Bohinj, Postojna, Skopcan, Soca Vally, etc. Most of the main sights in Slovenia are within a 2-hour drive from Ljubljana and the roads are good.
