SUGGESTIONS ON SAN FRANCISCO => THINGS TO SEE
Posted: Thu December 11, 2003 02:10 PM UTC
Hi everyone! My family and I (41,32, and 7 yrs. old) are visiting San Francisco from Jan.5 to Jan 11 2004. We would like to hear about suggestions on places and point of interests that we should not miss. A simple list of your suggestions will be highly welcome. Merry x-mass and a happy new year to all.

There's of course a ton of things to do. But, whenever I go to San Fran, I love to take a ferry (from Fisherman's Warf) to Sausalito and have lunch out there at one of the resaurants on the water. The views of the city and bay from Sausalito are beautiful and the town itself is very cool with some great shopping. If it's too cold in Jan. for a ferry on the bay for you, driving over the Golden Gate Bridge to get there is a great alternative.
On you way back from there if you take the ferry is to go to the aquarium at Fisherman's Warf. I like it there and bet you're 7 year old would as well.

Also, Alcatraz is very popular and fun. Be sure to book ahead if that's on your list since it often sells out on the weekends. Although, January might not be too bad for tickets.

Too bad the Giants won't be playing for you to catch a ball game there (although tickets are hard to get anyway).

There are plenty of other things but there are a couple suggestions.

The ferry to Sausalito is a very nice, cheap trip.
The trip out to and a tour of Alcatraz is also very worthwhile.

On Sundays, Golden Gate Park is closed to automobile traffic and the roads are open to pedestrians, bicyclists and roller skaters/bladers. Take the kids to the park on Sunday and rent bikes or skates/blades for some fun! You can also rent paddle boats at Stowe Lake if you like. A very nice way to spend a Sunday. Follow that up with (or start the day with) some dim sum at Ton Kiang, not far from that area of the park (see my restaurant tips on San Francisco) for a really perfect Sunday.

I agree about Sausalito. It's one of my favorite towns anywhere, and certainly lovely for visitors. The ferry is a great way to get there, but driving doesn't take long either, so either way is great. If you do drive to San Francisco, make sure to stop either at Vista Point, at the North end of Golden Gate Bridge, or go up the road on the other side of the North of the bridge to the Marin Headlands are for some great, classic views of the bridge with SF in the background.

If you like to take your kids to museums, check out SF Museum of Modern Art on 3rd Street, between Mission and Howard (I believe). A wonderful building that holds a fantastic collection. For a great kids museum, check out the Exploratorium -- a hands-on science museum that I still enjoy visiting as an adult. The Exploratorium is on the edge of the Marina District and is part of the Palace of Fine Arts building.

I don't know if it will still be open or not, but for the holidays there's an outdoor skating rink at the foot of Market Street, across the Embarcadero from the San Francisco Ferry Building.

Hi Jose,

I will suggest something completely lacking in culture and to some extent, education.

You mentioned you have a 7 year old child. Go to the Metreon Center, on Mission near the Financial District. The Metreon has the ultimate game arcade, hands on activities for kids, and numerous stores that display and allow you to try out the latest in gadgets. When you get hungry, grab lunch at any one of a number of restaurants in the Center.

The Metreon does have some redeeming educations value, however ... I love its IMAX Theatre, with its beautifully filmed nature, science and travel documentaries.

Next door is the Yerba Buena Center with an excellent and usually uncrowded ice rink.

Have a great trip to our beautiful city!

Karen

For your kid, do not miss the sea lions on pier 39 (go see my SF page) and the Exploratorium (Science museum with a touch and feel approach). The Sausalito ferry is great, I agree.
