Smoking a cigarette in Winnipeg in the winter
Posted: Tue December 22, 2009 10:30 PM UTC
Hi people. If one was lucky enough to be in Winnipeg from Sep-Dec how would one go about indulging in a cigarette?

Are there any indoor smoker's zones?

What do smokers do?

Most Provinces have enacted Legislation prohibiting smoking in public venues...restaurants,bars shopping malls etc etc...

Im sure its the same as it is here in Ontario...they'd be smart to dress warmly..because they're smoking outdoors!!! In fact September wouldn't be so much an issue as November to March..

Buy flame-retardant gloves (the thin ones like racing drivers use). Apart from that, no other suggestions LOL.

Just checked Environment Canada's web....temp right now there is a balmy -10...so yes...chances are they are..outside smoking..

Seriously..most of Canada has enacted similar Legislation...if youre staying at a hotel there will be smoking allocated floors of rooms..but in general....all across Canada...not in Public venues..VERBOTTEN!!

My solution (in Quebec and Ontario) was simply to change pubs after every drink and get my nicotine hit on the walk between them. That way you keep warm as well.

It has to be easier there than in San Francisco! Going in April - can't even find a hotel balcony that will allow us a puff. Humbugs, all of them. Been some years since we were in Winnipeg but there were lots of smokers there back then. I'll see if I can't find you a heated patio somewhere...

I end up in Winnipeg on business a at least 3 or 4 times a year. The locals are tough - they head off into a spot that is out of the wind. Their nicotine fix seems to take less time when it is -20C or colder out...

Rental cars - most of the cars I've rented in Canada recently are designated non-smoking, with a large warning sticker on the dashboard. I asked at the rental agency and was told that the do invoice you for cleanup if they smell that someone has smoked in the car.

OK, Craic - here's a couple I found that indicate that they have smoking patios. This doesn't mean those are accessible in the winter but it's worth a shot - we have a number of them here in Mpls that keep heaters running or at least don't lock the doors!

Also, keep your eye out for other smokers - they're the best resource for finding the hidden spots. You'll find them (as you know) outside of the pubs and bars - just ask. Or ask bartenders - they often know too. Good luck!

thanking you very much indeed

good tip to keep on the qui vive for smokers

IF i get to winnipeg it will be on a writing residency - and i have trained myself to do without smoking most of the time - but i cannot do without it when i am writing

so i am looking for a place where i can set up with my laptop and get some work done for a couple of hours a day

thanks again to everyone

and a pub is ideal (even though I have stopped drinking, but they will sell coffee and lemonade etc i suppose - and food to fuel me)

i am on a residency in NZ next year for 3 months and i know it will all be desperately non smoking - but even though it will be coldish i can rug up and set up outisde somewhere - or get to know some students at the uni - smoking students - and rent the use of their room or someone's garage or shed or something like that

i have family and friends in nz

but it suddenly struck me that winnipeg might be a different kettle of fish

my chances of getting it are slim mind you - but i do apply for a lot of things and get the occasional one

Smoking patios in Winnipeg in winter? I don't think so. They refer to it as "Winterpeg" for a reason. The people from Winnipeg and Edmonton have a friendly rivalry going as to which city is the coldest. Having made the mistake of having crossing Portage and Main to get to my hotel at 2:00 in the morning in the middle of February, my vote goes to Winnipeg.

Did they warn you about the mosquitos? Winnipeg sits on clay, which means lots of standing water in the spring for breeding purposes. If the conditions are right, things can get downright ugly when the little blighters hatch.

You know that I have found from experience that renting a small flat that permits smoking is often the best choice.

It takes time to find one - need lots of patience for the search. The agencies like booking.com are useless, but you can sometimes get a lead from them and then correspond directly with the flat owner/manager.

Yup, we've been doing the VRBO (condo/apartment/etc. rental) thing more than hotels lately as we find we have scads more room, and amenities that we'll actually use (like in-suite laundry, kitchen, internet, free local calls, etc) for a better price. You can also get all-important private patios and balconies for lounging or puffing about. You might even find one that allows lighting up inside but they're rare.

The travel industry is hurting so rates are even better, and wanting a long-term rental should help as well. Sept/Oct will be chilly-to-cold but shouldn't have reached the brutal stage yet.

As far as I know, there is no smoking in any public building in Manitoba anymore. So the pubs will not be able to help you. I thought you could still get smoking rooms at hotels, but as a non-smoker myself, I am not sure.

If you are here for three months, you would need to rent a short-term place - that would be your best bet - you are allowed to smoke in your own place if the landlord is renting a smoking suite.

Yes, it never ceases to amaze me passing people smoking outside when it is -25C outside.
