Re: Durlach - what stop and where to go have lunch Posted: Tue November 17, 2009 08:20 PM UTC
I pootled off to Durlach on my own before the Karlsruhe meet.
A nice little place. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/t/1c948c/6/bdf4/0/
The tram stopped at several places, but I got off at the stop which seemed to be the middle of the 'town' (by what seemed to be the main square). It was about a 10-minute slowish, slightly uphill walk to the funicular (Turmbergerbahn), which is worth taking if it's fuctioning when you visit. Nice walks in the woodland, and good views.
Didn't try the restaurant at the top of the funicular though, or eat there sorry.

There are several stops in Durlach along the #1 line. Durlach has a nice little 'medieval' Christmas market next to the palace, the stop is "Schlossplatz" (not to be confused with the Schloss in Karlsruhe, Durlach has one of its own). You can grab a bite on the market, or visit one of the cafes and pubs in the surroundings, there are several.
For the Turmbergbahn, you have to stay (or hop back) on the tram two stops further to "Durlach Turmberg", then walk 500 m uphill to the bottom station of the Turmbergbahn funicular (which is not included in the KVV tickets you'll have, by the way). The restaurant on top is next to the tower, it is named "Klenerts", very good but not the cheapest place in Durlach. In fact, the place has some VT history, we had a meeting there last year in summer when nhcram and chrishc came to Karlsruhe...

Rechecked map: for Turmbergbahn, it is ONE stop further from Schlossplatz, the stop is officially named Karl-Weysser-Straße, but this is the final stop of the line, so impossible to miss.

Thank you Jane and Kathrin, this sounds perfect! Looks like I'll need to keep a little secret about the slight uphill - my traveling companion is not much of a walker, but I think she should be fine!

I think you'll enjoy the Christmas market in Durlach, I recommend stopping there. A part of it is in medieval style and fun to see. There are a Local customs tip with photos and a video on my Karlsruhe page, to give you an idea. The first photo also shows the tram stop (Schlossplatz) which is as close to the market as can be.

This looks like so much fun! Love the singer!
Just how steep is this little hill that we need to go up to the funicular?

Crikey! How long is a piece of string?
Erm...not really a hill, more of a gentle upward gradient. Less steep than the road from the Valbom to the station, as I recall.

Thanks Jane. If I was going on my own I would not blink, but the person coming with me is not into doing lots of walking. She's one of my husband's caregivers who has become a good friend over the last three years. She's been in "training" this month, riding the adult cycle, so hopefully she can walk one kilometer at a time ;-)

I think she'll be ok. It's much less than a km from the main square, I think.
I've found the Turmbergerbahn timetable:
http://www.kvv.de/kvv/freizeit/turmbergbahn.php
Only runs on Sat & Sun in winter.

If you have a day ticket or the welcome card for KVV trams, which I assume you'll have (herewith recommended), you can save yourselves half the way from the square where the Christmas market is by hopping back on the tram 1 or 8 and travelling that one stop further to the end of the line. From there, the walking distance to the Turmbergbahn is approx. 350/400 m (according to my map).

Thank you Jane and Kathrin.
Would the Christmas markets be considered a holiday ... I think I saw Sat. Sun, and holidays in the page Jane sent.
I already looked at the menu for Klenerts, and can almost taste the pork tenderloins with mushrooms - hmmmm! so how do you get to the restaurant if the tram is not running? Is the tram the only way to get up there?
I must come and stay a couple of months in Germany so I can focus on learning the language!

Re: Durlach - what stop and where to go have lunch Posted: Thu November 19, 2009 10:10 AM UTC
Brrrr. Indeed. The Turmbergbahn won't run that Friday. Thanks J for checking. Turmbergbahn is a funicular, there is no tram to the hilltop. Walking up is defnitely not an option.
Option 1: tram 1 to Christmas market, see Christmas market, then take a taxi to go to the top of Turmberg to enjoy view and meal at Klenerts.
Nearest taxi stand will be in Hengstplatz, one block from Schlossplatz and Christmas market.
Option 2: find a place for lunch in the centre of Durlach.
I am not familiar enough with the restaurants in Durlach to give a recommendation - Karlsruhers????

Thank you Kathrin. I think I'll send the restaurant a note to see how easy it is to get a taxi to return. I am not on a tight budget, but I wonder what the fare to go up will be?

It's not very far at all so won't be much.
Def not want-to-walkable though! :-)

What about doing the Durlach Christmas market and the Turmberg on the Saturday together with the group? We have not yet decided what to do that day. And the mediaval christmas market is definitely worth a visit.
On the other hand, we have been there already during a former Glühwein Meeting and some of the attendees have already seen it. Maybe we should discuss this on the Friday evening.
I'm already looking very much forward to seeing you all again soon.

Oh-oh ... I did not realize we had plans for the second day, I have tickets to go to Koblenz ... should I cancel them? I'd rather stay with the group.
Thanks for the offer Berndt - we can run up to Durlach on Friday and just go to the Medieval Christmas market, skip the funicular. I need to check how late the tickets to Koblenz can be cancelled - so, if there a Saturday part to the meet we can join.

Being in Durlach on Saturday would be perfect for me!!! I'll be arriving at Karlsruhe central station at 2 p.m. on Saturday so I could hop on the tram and join the group right away.
Bernd, I'll email you and Christine to discuss details and exchange mobile numbers so we can somehow communicate either Friday evening or Saturday morning when you know where you'll all be on Saturday afternoon.

Martha, we usually do something together on the second day of the Glühwein-Meeting. But we wanted so decide this spontanously so we can discuss this with the group.

I need to check the terms of the tickets we have to Koblenz - don't recall if and how late these can be cancelled. If I cannot cancel them we may need to go on to Koblenz on Saturday.
Thank you Kathrin! - depending on the tickets to Koblenz, it may be we go to Durlach Friday before the meet - but perhaps we could meet Saturday night!
