Bucharest in January, Too Cold???
Posted: Tue November 10, 2009 09:30 PM UTC
Hello all,

I am thinking of traveling to Bucharest (and around Romania,) in mid-January for a couple of weeks. I have done some research as far as weather is concerned, but would like to know from those who have experienced it if that time of year is too cold to really enjoy things?

Living in Los Angeles I crave the winter months (it's always sunshine here,) and I do enjoy the snow and ice for a change!

Thanks for any words of wisdom!

If you enjoy snow and ice, certainly it won't be too cold. You just need to dress accordingly - wearing several layers is the way to go here, and remember some proper winter shoes (too often I've seen tourists wearing thin summery/atumn shoes in winter, which must be dreadful). Take some breaks from being outdoors, I'm sure there are plenty of nice cafés to be found, museums to be explored etc.

Don't let the weather stop you from travelling where you want to*!

* Unless we're talking dangerous weather, but that's rather unlikely :-P

Thank you so much for the advice! I'll get out my warm clothes (that I never get to wear in Los Angeles,) and hit the streets. And...my boots are ready to go!
All the best,
David

Due to extreme climatic changes the World is experiencing at the moment, trying to predict the weather can be difficult because of local, on the day variations.
Most places now are seeing weather conditions well outside the norm.
The information below should be used as a guide only.

Here is the average weather for Bucharest for this time of year.
Enjoy your holiday.

January.
High 34f / 1c
Low 21f / -6c
Rain 1.60in / 41.0mm

January could be either cold (0 degrees) or very cold (-10 degrees) in January - that being temps daytime. We had some heavy snow winters and some no snow winter. If you get a heavy snow winter than it's more difficult to travel but the landscapes are great. Driving on Romanian roads on heavy snow and ice is a harsh adventure, you can be blocked not because your fault but because some drivers don't take appropiate measures and if one truck goes off you can stay there and spend a day in the car in snow :)

I alwas say the best time to visit is March-June, when spring brings flowers and 15-20 temps or in mild autumns Sept-Oct when it's 20-25.

As previously mentioned, we can't tell the weather for January, it might be like the last 2 years, mild snow, but cold it will be for sure - get warm clothes and Goretex shoes as the snow melts and that's water :)
