Small life in Belize
Posted: Sat December 6, 2003 04:45 PM UTC
I'm going to Belize in a few weeks and I really want to get off the tourist track and get into some small villages. I'll be in the Belize City area and in the Xunatunich area (cayo district), I'm really only looking for a few hours of so to spend enjoying life in Belize. Any reccomendations? transportation?

I'm not sure about your time issue. It doesn't sound like a long time. But, transportation is pretty easy in Belize. You can take a bus from Belize City to the Cayo district quite easily from the main bus station. It takes you to San Ignacio where you can grab another bus the remaining 8 kms or so to Xunatunich to see the Mayan Ruins (which are pretty good for Belize). You have to take a little cable ferry across the Belize River to get to the Ruins which is kind of neat since its a little hand crank that they use to get across.

There great accomodation right near Xunatunich, called the truck stop. Here an older American couple have built a great eco friendly lodge with a butterfly green house and an interactive museum on the rainforest.

I hope this helps,
john

I do not understand your time frame. How can you get any enjoyment from being in a small village for a couple of hours?

To me the two quinessential small towns are Caye Caulker and Placencia. But the two towns are tourist destinations.

Here are some current populations of towns (with the district name after the town name) in thousands
Punta Gorda Toledo 4.3
San Pedro Belize 4.5 (Ambergris Caye)
Benque Viejo Cayo District (up by Xunatunich so this would be convenient) 5.6
Corozal Corozal 8.6
Dangriga Stann Creek 9.7
Orange Walk Orange Walk 14.8
San Ignacio Cayo 14.5 That includes Santa Elena across the river from San Ignacio in those figures

by small i mean really small, like pop. under 200. Anyway, I just finished my Belize trip and I'm in Mexico now. I found some interesting places to explore ouside of San Ignacio by Xunanunich in the west. Thanks anyway,
