Re: Staying 30 days in Rio, Dec 28th to end of Jan. What area should I rent an apartment in? Posted: Fri October 16, 2009 03:42 AM UTC
When I visited there, six years ago, I rented a place for one month, located in Copacabana (Posto 6), next to Arpoador. For a solo traveller like I, it was a great pick. It was safe, connected by bus to any place, close to the Ipanema beach for bathing, the Av. Atlantica for jogging, close to the hippie markets of both Copacabana and Ipanema, and the discos/pubs in Ipanema and Leblon. For more nightlife with Brazilian music Lapa is the best bet, only make sure to go in group and take a cab to go and come back.
My advise is that, if money is not a concern, go to Ipanema, you'll have the beach, restaurants and nightlife there. If money is somewhat a concern, Arpoador is the best bet. Its location is unbeatable, is safe, well connected in terms of tranportation, and despite its closeness to Ipanema its prices are more reasonable. If you finally pick Copacabana, please rent in Postos 5 or 6, which are next to Arpoador and Ipanema. The area closer to the beach (between Nossa Senhora de Copacabana and Av. Atlantica) is nicer and safer.
Enjoy your trip!

Hi Lawrence and welcomte to VT. Think you might like it here. Just a word about timing. You are going to be in the BEST place on the planet for New Years Eve. Two million people on the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Take a look, full screen sound cranked and let the panorama go a full circle.
http://panoramas.dk/new-year-2007/rio-de-janeiro.html
That being said, the time of your arrival may put a kink in your plans if you don't act NOW, to secure a place. Consider the price for your arrival may be high, but should be negotiable for the remainder of your stay.
Note: considering that you will likely bar hop a bit, - tip is usually included in the bill, but a little extra will get extra. Never start a tab at any bar. Pay as you go. (This goes for most places, not just Brazil).
Remember to wear the traditional white on NYE, - you will have an absolute blast! Been there twice on NYE. Check out this guy if you wanna go local. Hang around and get the real story:
http://www.faveladodarocinha.com/z.html
If you have a shot at apartments in either Cobacabana or Ipanema, don't wait, get it now. You will do just fine in those locations. Just consider the timing and re-negotiate after the holidays, if they insist on a holiday price during the season. Have a blast guys!

I prefer Ipanema or Leblon becase for Tourists they are much safer if you are out late. Copa is full of too many tourists. Arpoador is nice becase you are in between.
If you love crowds of people the beach on Copa will be nice but you can see the fireworks from ares further down the beaches of Ipanema and Leblon to and the beach is not as crowded.
As others have said, GET YOUR LODGING set up NOW!!! best before nov 1st. I am from Rio and have a friend who rents out apartements for short term rentals. His name is David and he is American. I have heard nothing but good things about him and his services. Check out what he has on his website.
Go to:

Arpoador is the place. It's right in between Copacabana and Ipanema.
And it has the best of both worlds. The only place in Rio where you don't have
a large avenue to cross to get to the water. And what a beautiful scenery!
Enjoy it. Rio is the best city in Brazil - which unfortunately causes jealousy among Brazilians from other places.
Boa viagem!

Thanks for the info! I called your friend at http://www.gringomanagement.com/2bedroom.html
he had an apartment listed that was the exact same address of one that I was getting ready to put a deposit down on at
www.ae-riorentals.com
whom I have been talking to for weeks.
AE rentals said the apartment is open. Gringorentals said he personally rented the apartment and it was not available.
Now I am not sure what to do. I double checked the address and the apartment number.
Thanks
Lawrence

Further, I have seen before where people are promised one apartment, and when they arrive they get another, - and then it is too late to complain. Sounds like you got a honest answer through "gringo". I saw the same issue here on VT a few weeks ago, where the bait and switch was done.

I know David of gringo management to be honest guy. I would call him as right now he is in Arizona..He lists his number on his website...
in Rio you can "buy" apatments..just because something is in the same adress and building does not mean it is the same unit..unless the other agency is saying the same unit number..
I originally learned about David from the Trip Advisor website, where nobody had anything bad to say about him. I called him about 1 month ago and chatted with him for about hour and I do not get any feeling that this guy be a bad guy or a scammer..he seems decent and all the people on Trip Advisor talk highly of him..

Hi, I live in Rio, in the Santa Teresa neighborhood - personally I think this is the nicest place to stay in the city (and I have also lived in Copa, Ipanema and, er, Barra da Tijuca!) However, it´s a long way from the beach so I appreciate you might not want to stay there! If you´re looking for something flashy, you could try these guys. I stayed in the Copa apartment and it was great, and amazing value considering the price of hotels http://planeteyetraveler.com/2009/07/17/apartments-that-deliver-luxury-for-less/
Have fun!
