Amalfi Honeymoon in Italy
Posted: Mon December 1, 2003 08:31 PM UTC
My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to Italy--we want to be by the ocean. We're looking at Taormina, Sicily or the Amalfi Coast... Any suggestions? We'll be in Italy in June for about 11 days--don't want to be surrounded by tourists--if that's still possible. Just looking for a place by the sea, with restaurants and local life nearby. Thanks in advance!

Mmmmmmm you forgot to say in which month.... If you are looking for a not-too-crowded place it is very important....
Taormina (it is in sicily) and Amalfi are both 5 stars places for a honeymoon, but in some period they are overcrowded.... Little better Capri and Cinque Terre.
Some other good places near the sea you can find in Isola d'Elba and in Sardinia (like Porto Cervo or Porto Rotondo, Maddalena, Santa Teresa di Gallura) but once again the timing IS very i,portant.
let us know a little more.
Ciao
Francesco

I hate to burst your bubble, but the two places you are considering will be full of tourists. What month are you going? I believe that if you choose Taormina then you should consider touring around Sicily. Taormina is just a little taste of Sicily. Also, Sicily is about 30 to 50% less expensive than the Amalfi Coast. As for the Amalfi Coast - it depends when and where you are going. I must say that Capri gets a bad rap. Staying in Capri is wonderful, most of the 'tourists' are day trippers that come by ferry/hydrofoil and around 5PM they have cleared out. The Hotel Cesare Agusto in Anacapri is wonderful and does great deals for honeymoons as well.

I reread your post - no problem in June, prices are not low season, but it will not be crowded, the big surge is from the first few days of July till the middle of September. 11 days? I would think about Sicily and maybe throw in a couple of the islands into consideration: Ustica, Pantelleria, Salina etc..

We stayed in Santa Margherita and loved it. It's within a boat ride (or train ride) to the Cinque Terre, and within walking or bussing distance to chi-chi Portofino. It has several nice restaurants, is on the coast, and lots of spots for romantic walks in the sunset. Wherever you choose, if it's in Italy, it'll be great. Have fun!
