Re: Hotel for solo traveller in Havana Posted: Fri August 14, 2009 09:53 PM UTC
you may wish to look into www.cuba-junky.com regarding a lot of information on Cuba.
there are two types of accomodation available for tourists in cuba, either in hotels or at the homes licensed for the purpose of taking on guests. the hotels would run anywhere from 50-80 USD on the average and the private homes, also called casa particulars will cost 20-30 usd. by the way cuba has its own currency for the tourists which are not exchangeable outside the country, called CUC, or convertible pesos. when you change Euros, which by the way is the best currency to bring to cuba you will loose 11 per cent of its worth. if you use credit cards at the hotels, they will charge you in us dollars plus 11 per cent. cuban currency called moneda nacional or cuban peso, are for every day use of the cubans, and most tourists never get to use it since almost all the tourist services have to be paid for in cuc.
Regarding meeting people, you would wish you didnt meet so many people. Cubans in the island are some of the most friendly people on earth and all first time visitors to cuba fall in love with something or other or someone or other. if you have any specific questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I may be more than a little biased, Cuba is a wonderful little island, mi isla rica.. my fabulous island..
