Darwin and Kakadu in November
Posted: Thu August 13, 2009 05:56 PM UTC
Hi everibody,
we're a couple living in Italy planning our honeymoon in Australia from 9th to 28th of november. Our first stage should have been northen territory (Catherine Gorge and Kakadu national park), then Alice Springs, Queensland and finally Sydney. Unfortunately some travel agencies in Italy advised us against visiting northern territory and kakadu on november, because of the rainy season...They said that almost 90% of kakadu park is inaccessible....We would like to know if this is true or if it is possible, in any case, to visit this area.
If it's not possible, which should be alternatives...we're evaluating Kangaroo island?

Thanks for your suggestions!

You've been given wrong information, November it's all still open. But very few tourists come at that time because it's too hot and humid. There's storms in November but the rains that cut places off don't come until late in December, sometimes as late as January.

I agree with 1+1---I was going to suggest you contact this member regarding your post but it has been answered.
If you like really hot and humid weather then it is so worth the visit--the tropical rain will give you a wonderful experience.

hi I had 5 days in Kakadu NP in February 1999, the Wet season, but there was little rain, However the Yellow Water area was covered with water as far as I could see. Little or no birdlife and did not see a crocodile.

Just returned from 10 days in the Northern Territory, 1st to 10 th August. Weather was fantastic , warm with blue sky. We visited Darwin, Litchfield National Park only a few hours from Darwin, just spectacular. Then through Adelaide River to Katherine and the Katherine Gorge, only sighted one crocodile, then to Kakadu for 2 nights, just spectacular, birdlife on wetlands, numerous varieties. Crocodiles everywhere. One of the best holidays I have had. We took a tour into Arnhem Land, Aboriginal Territory.

I think your Travel agent has given you good advice. However worth a look at Darwin and Litchfield National park, the waterfalls should be spectacular in the wet.

Then fly to Alice Springs and Urulu, will be hot and humid, I visited in Befruary some years back, arrived off the plane at 11am temp 37.9 and it never fell much below during my 5 days, rain should not be a problem. The tourist sights remain unchanged.

Mike

We got back from Kakadu last week (11 Oct). Rainy season hadn't started but it was still very very hot and humidity just starting. It would be a shame to miss the Yellow Water Cruise at Cooinda if the river was too high - this was the highlight of our trip. We saw literally thousands of wet land birds and numerous crocodiles. The guide was excellent; she could spot even tiny birds - the tiny azure king fisher was perfection itself. We walked into Jim Jim Falls (no falls, but the swimming was fantastic, walked into Twin Falls (no falls, no swimming allowed). You need to be quite agile to do these walks (after a rather squashed 4wd drive in) as you need to be able to jump from rock to rock. Doing it in the rain might not be very pleasant.
We stayed at Gagijdu Cooinda - it was ok, but I wouldn't have thought it would be a honeymoon type hotel. 3 star at the most.
