Advice please Posted: Thu July 9, 2009 10:34 AM UTC
Hi,
I am planning to do a mini tour of Bavaria with my wife and 10 year old daughter. Planning to stay in Munich, Regensburg and Nuremberg with a day trip to Neuschwanstein. How long do you recommend to stay in each place and what is the best way to get between the cities.
Many thanks in advance
Chris

Bestw ay to travel betweeh cities in on the train..German trains are safe, efficient and compfortabel..
bahn.de also have some excellent advace booking offers only available online.....so it is worth checking those out. You can either get an e-ticket (and you absolutely must take the card you paid with, as it functions as your identification) or have tickets posted to you (for a small fee).
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml
will give you times, details (even platform numbers, if you click the arrow next to each train) and fares. You can buy online through this link too...avoid using agencies such as Raileurope, or you will pay extra in commission.
As for length of stay in each place, I'll be better placed to give an opinion next week (I'm going to Nurnberg on Saturday!). But Munich, I think, should be your longest stay.....and Regensburg is an easy daytrip from Nurnberg, so you could base yourself there for the rest of the time (perhaps also visiting Bamberg and Wurzburg, both easy train rides).

A gentle word of warning: Do not attempt to visit Neuschwanstein without an advance booking otherwise you will not get in. This can be booked via the web and you will get a timed ticket. You need one complete day as it you combine it with Hochenwagu which is down the hill with Neuschwanstein up the hill. Having seen the complete triology - Herrenchemise, Neuschwanstein & Linderhof - I feel Linderhof is the better
Both Bamberg & Regensburg are simply delightful and do warrant a day each. Regensburg is a place of contrasts, from a modern shopping centre, a brewery, landmark of Jewish deportees and Bhoemian cafe [think the name was Prinz - check via VT destinations]
To walk around the Nurnberg parade ground ??Ludoptian [which is on the edge] takes a while. It is all very well signposted. The town of Nurnberg is small with the castle at the top.

Staying at Regensburg without taking a boat tour along the Danube and Main–Danube Canal through the Altmuehltal would be a huge mistake, I guess. So add another day for the following day trip:
From Regensburg, you need to get to Kehlheim, better yet Weltenburg Abbey, then hop on a ship (no reservation required, boats leave quite frequently) to - say: Riedenburg.
Some impressions:
Weltenburg Abbey:
