Bolivia 1 day Uyuni tours?
Posted: Wed July 8, 2009 03:09 PM UTC
I am going with 2 children (7 and 9) so I'd like to do a tour, but I'd love to arrive in the morning and return to LaPaz in the evening.

I've read about one day tours. Is this possible?

thanks

I would think it impossible. Uyuni is a long way from La Paz, maybe 500 km, maybe more. I took me about 24 hours on the bus. There is also a train (from Oruro if not La Paz), but I doubt it's quicker.

You could probably find a one day tour of the Salar, but from Uyuni. Even then, you'd miss a lot - most tours have 2 or 3 night stops.

Indeed impossible! I took coach from La Paz to oruro, then train and the journey time was approx 12 hours. Note that the train does not run every day. You need at least 2 days for travelling to & from Uyuni + 1 day for the tour and that's an absolute minimum & would entail v. long days for such young kids (my train arrived at Uyuni at 1am!

Thanks to both of you (even though its not good news).

Think I may have to pass on this then as sounds like I would need to leave La Paz for 5 days to do this.

Besides Titicaca, any other suggestions of things to do that wouldn't require leaving La Paz for a long time?

thanks

Yes!

Tiwanaku is worth a visit and is a full day outing if you do it independently (taking collectivo from the cementary bus station corner of Eyzaguire and Jose Maria Azin)or either half a day/a day if via travel agent with guide.

Also worth a visit & about half a day is the Valley de la Luna north far off la Paz a bit further than the wealthy (and lower) embassy quarters. Very peculiar rock formation.

Copacabana is more involved and travel is about approx 3h30 but worth staying there one night rather than just visiting Titicaca in a rush.

Coroico is also an option but I would not advise it with young kids as it involves a) a quite dangerous road nicknamed 'the most dangerous road in the world'; and b) leaving the altiplano to go down several thousand metres into the Yungas and then back. This I think deserve at least a night in Coroico to recover. OK for adults, a bit harsh on kids IMMO.

thanks a lot, I will check on all those options. I don't want to be anywhere near the most dangerous road in the world though. lol
