Day trip to China Posted: Mon July 6, 2009 07:44 PM UTC
Peeps
What is the most interesting place in China for a day trip from Hong Kong -- things to see, places to eat and of course shoppng for clothes and trinkets. With your suggestions can you give me transportation options?
Cheers

Well, it's either Shenzhen or Macau.
Macau for the history & food & Shenzhen for the miniture monument of the world (Windows of the world) & China electronics shoppings..

There are fast Supercat ferries from HK to macau for only about 200 HongKong dollars...Macau has always been a favorite side-trip from Hongkong...Enjoy! Norman :)

I did not consider Macau when I first read this question because Macau is a former Portuguese colony. I think it is the last colony returned to Mainland China.
However, I highly recommend Macau over Shenzhen.

Macau was returned to Chinese control in 1999, two years after Hong Kong. It was thus the first and the last European colony in China. Like Hong Kong, it is a Special Administrative Region, which means that certain aspects of its administration are guaranteed until 2049. From what I have read about the place, it seems to be more "Chinese" than Hong Kong, if you can avoid the casinos.
