Taking bus from Naples to Sorrento - book in advance? Posted: Mon July 6, 2009 01:27 PM UTC
Hi,
I'm going to Sorrento for the first time on Sunday and plan on taking the bus from Naples airport. I found the website and there is an option to pre-book or pay on the day. I'd prefer to pay on the day, just in case the plane is delayed, but I'm wondering whether the bus gets really busy, in which case I will pre-book. It'll be about mid-day on Sunday.
Any advice?
Thanks!

no need to pre-book
just arrive and get on the bus - leaves every 30-45 minutes
please be aware that the road to Sorrento is curvy and slow and start/stop = we all got carsick
if you get carsick, I suggest you take the bus to the train station, then take the train to Sorrento - the train is easy and quick

Hi,
no it's not necessary to book in advance!
I have used an alternative transfer from the airport, (it's a different price but I have travelled in totally relax)
I highly recommend using Anthony's Car Service for trnasfer and excursions around the Amalfi Coast. His website is amalfitransfer.com

If you want to see Anthony in action visit a short film at www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3lSiJ3pFas.
you will enjoy your time with him

Tim, does the bus from the airport to Sorrento really leave every 30-45 minutes? I am looking at the http://www.curreriviaggi.it/ website, and it looks like the bus leaves only every 1.5 to 2 hours or more (which makes more sense, really).
Are you perhaps thinking of the buses to the train station, which do leave every 20-30 minutes?
I agree that it's good that the OP know the backup plan: to take the bus from the airport to the main train station, then take the Circumvesuviana (http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en) down to Sorrento. With frequent buses to the train station, and the fact that the Circumvesuviana is a commuter line (so, no reserved seat and no way to sell out) that leaves every 30 minutes (even on Sunday, apparently), if the bus is sold out on Sunday with the OP arrives, the OP sure isn't stuck...

Currieri now have online booking available, but I have never used it. However, I have never travelled at high season either....you might consider booking online from that point of view.
http://www.curreriviaggi.it/
Click on 'Linee' for timetable.
Otherwise, just pay the driver when you get on.
The journey actually takes around an hour, and can be slower if there is traffic congestion (take that into account if you are using the bus back to the airport).

There is a neat little narrow gauge train from Naples main station to Sorrento called the Circumvesuviana. Trip takes about an hour and cost 3 euros.
This train also stops at Pompeii.

But to take the Circumvesuviana you first have to get into Naples (to Naples Garibaldi station) from the airport.
Much, much easier (and quicker) to take the Currieri bus direct to Sorrento form the airport for 10 euro, imo. The Circumvesuviana to Sorrento takes an hour, and to that you must add travel time (by bus or taxi) from the airport to Napoli Garibaldi.
Currieri buses stop right outside arrivals. Look left as you exit. The bus stand is the last on the left.
