Nepal Hostels in Kathmandu
Posted: Mon July 6, 2009 01:00 PM UTC
I am travelling alone to Nepal in september/oktober, on a low budget. I think it is fun to meet other travellers along the road. Does anyone here know of a hostel in Kathmandu where it is easy to meet other backpackers?

Also, I would like to do a trek, but I have almost no experience. I am however in normal physical shape. Does anyone have a recommadation for a trek that might be right for a beginner like me?

Definitely try the kathmandu guest house in thamel if you are wanting to meet and socialise with other travellers. It's relatively cheap in the heart of the action and gathers a great crowd of people. As long as you are in decent shape than most treks in nepal should be within your reach. Buy a copy of lonely planets trekking in the nepal himalaya and have a browse and see what tickles your fancy. Gokyo and everest base camp are both amazing treks and if you fly into lukla they can be done in a fairly short amount of time. Nepal is such an awesome country. good luck. hope this helps.

Sorry to say that I have to disagree with the above poster on both counts !!

The Kathmandu Guesthouse is over rated as well as over priced and only lives on it’s past reputation + that it now mainly caters for “Groups” and to try and meet individuals or break into these Groups is all but impossible.
Personally I would stay at The Great Wall Hotel and socialise in places like the Garden Restaurant at Pilgrims’ Guesthouse in North Thamel – I wouldn’t stay at Pilgrims however as I think the rooms are overpriced for what you get !!

For a 1st time trek I would head to Pokhara and maybe trek ABC, this is a 10 day trek, Pokhara to Pokhara and really gets you into the heart of the mountains, but with far lesser risks of things like AMS because it is at a lower altitude.

Details of both accommodation in Nepal, all the different treks and styles of trekking are written up in the tips section of my Nepal page, you might find them useful.

If you need further info then please feel free to drop me a line

Robs advice is good - if you want to do a short trek instead of going all the way to ABC I would recommend Dhampus - Landruk - Ghandruk - Birithani .. you will get spectacular views of mountains without too much stress..

another one is fly to jomson (from pokhara)then trek to Marpha, Kagbeni, Jarkot, muktinath then back to Jomson and fly back to pokhara

just go it will chnage your life...
