Civitavecchia Taxi/Shuttle tour from Civitavecchia to Rome or train
Posted: Mon July 6, 2009 11:47 AM UTC
We are arriving in Civitavecchia on 8th August 2009 and plan a days excursion into Rome.

We are in a party of 6 however one member of the party is wheelchair bound but can transfer to a car seat. The only suitable cruise excursion is a 5 hour coach trip, only 45 minutes of which is free time before a 0.8km walk back to the bus.

Does anybody know how much it would cost to hire a private taxi/shuttle bus for the day?

Would we be able to manage by train...do the stations have elevators for disabled passengers ? Is Rome a wheelchair friendly city or a nightmare?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure how wheelchair friendly Rome is or how much a taxi would cost for the day.I know that its roughly £100 each way so you might need to haggle a bit with the driver.I know the train is much cheaper but dont know how wheelchair friendly they are and was told that the station is a 10-15 min walk so you might need a taxi to the station.you might get more info on cruise critic.com.

I'm only familiar with Rome based companies and most have prices for transfers from Civitavecchia/Rome on their websites. You can arrange to hire for a day, but they will have to quote you.

If you use Limo Service Rome, make sure you don't get a rip off company with a similar name that puts an S at the end of service.

Rome is not very accessible. Most of the trains between Civitavecchia/Rome are R trains and don't sell seat reservations so you many not have a seat for the ride. Many of the stations are not accessible either plus you would have the problem of the stairs to get on and off the train. There are only 4-5 main stations in Italy that offer any kind of assistance/porter. I would opt for a limo service for the day.

This lady has written about her experiences in a wheelchair in Rome. You might find it useful.

We're arriving the same day on the Ruby Princess; we have been there before. The train station is near the port and can be a short walk depending on where the ship docks. Shouldn't be too tough for a wheel chair. The trains don't have wheelchair lifts. My wife is also disabled and we thought we had it covered but forget Civitavecchia. Since the ship carries a lot of passengers and this will be the final port for our ship, I think the trains will be full. I recommend getting a taxi but it will be expensive, the train is around six euro, one way and leaves you at Termini station. If your cruise doesn't end here, you won't have a lot of time in Rome proper. You should plan to come again. It is my favorite city in the world. However, it is old and not set up for wheelchairs. Not so bad if you have someone pushing and pulling the chair, but terrible if you don't have help.
