France Thesee-la-Romaine
Posted: Sun July 5, 2009 10:13 PM UTC
Has anyone ever been to a place in the Loire, not far from Chenonceau, called "Thesee-la-Romaine"? It's supposed to have Roman ruins, and a small museum with pottery and other artifacts.

Is it worth a short detour and an hour or so? I will be in the area, and if it's worth it, then I'll make time for it.

Thanks

I think this link can help you
http://mairie.pagespro-orange.fr/commune.de.chateauvieux/page7_10.htm

Between Thesees and CHENONCEAU, there are about 20 Kms.
Historically, this region is very rich.
Have a good trip.

We spent a month near Montrichard once an visited Thesee. The little town is very pleasant with a nice park between the church and Hotel de Ville (town hall). The Roman ruins are extensive and impressive. They are outside of the village on route D176 east of town (between Chenonceaux and Thesee). I think you would enjoy them. The hours change from season to season and they are not open during lunch time. You might want to check the hours before you go. It is very easy to spot the large ruins from the roadside and it is well marked.

It is a beautiful drive from the village of Chenonceaux and you may want to make a stop at Montrichard. They have a raptor show at the chateau that is worth a stop.

You might type Thesee into the VT Search Window and see if any photos have been posted here. I'll try to put a few in later . . . but it's time to fix dinner right now. LOL

BTW, I'm not crazy. The chateau is Chenonceau and the village is Chenonceaux. I have no idea why they are spelled differently.

---> Beausoleil,
The owner of the chateau at the time of the Revolution, Mme. Dupin, took off the "x" at the end to mark the difference with the village. Royalists against Republicans "simplement". (Wikipedia).

for Beausoleil, the diff between Chennnceaux and Chenonceau is because the owner of the castle Mme Dupin (another madame )at the period of the French revolution wanted to have a difference between what is castle royal and republic town ::) You are in royal France country ::)

Theese-la-Romaine is a nice town although I am not one for Roman ruins fan. the town is between Montrichard , and about 11 km from Saint-Aignan nice little town with a nice church collegiale and castle where you can see the terraces and the cour d'honneur the rest is privately closed. Thesee has an archeological museum to visit which may be of your interest.

Thank you. I learn something new every day. 8^)

Pedro, have you ever eaten at Le Mange-Grenouille on rue Paul Boncoeur in St. Aignan? We really enjoyed it.

St. Aignan is a lovely little town and there are great views from the Court of Honor you mentioned.

Hm . . . a continuing invasion!

BTW, I did post some photos of the Roman ruins in Thesee. Just type Thesee into the VT Search Window and they should appear. There is not much other information on the tiny town on VT. The drive from Chenonceaux is lovely.
