Bergen Norway in a nutshell - would you recommend it to a pregnant traveller?
Posted: Sun July 5, 2009 06:27 PM UTC
Hi there:)

My husband and I are going to Bergen in two weeks time. We thought of doing the Norway in a Nutshell tour in a day (Bergen to Bergen)- as we will only be in Norway for 3 days in total. At that stage I will be 21 weeks pregnant, do you think it will be safe for me to do that tour? Is this route very bumpy?

Thanks for your help and advice:)

Norway in a Nutshell is mainly a set of two train rides, a boat ride, a bus ride, and one last train to Bergen.

There is no bumpiness involved. The bus goes pretty high and takes turns, but the road although narrow, is steady.

The one part where you may want to do some planning is the change into the second train (first change in the tour). I had read that people "rammed" the train to get a good seat - this is fairly true. So it would be a good idea to let your husband do the "ramming", and get in the train leisurely once he has found you a seat. This is not as bad as it sounds, and depending on the time of year you're traveling may not be an issue, however in high time there are some people who could be a bit over-zealous to get a good window seat. This is in no way any reason to bypass the trip - it is not bumpy and it's wonderful.

It is a good idea to bring a sandwich with you - there is food to be sold somewhere but not memorable, but we enjoyed being able to kick back and enjoy the spectacular scenery. You can make your sandwich during breakfast.

Enjoy!

The train makes a stop at the biggest waterfall.

Actually, Norway in a Nutshell is how I started using VT - I had a question re. taking luggage on the boat, which was OK. My husband had a bad neurological condition that caused when we took the trip, and all was fine.

You will only be ascending to 800 metres above sea level, from Flam to Myrdal. Fairly slowly.

Naeroyfjorden and Aurlandsfjorden are pretty sheltered, not much chance of heavy seas.

I have never been to Norway but in your condition you may need to some access to coal dust or ice cream and tuna fish butties or perhaps pea pie which as a strange one I had to produce a few years back. At 21 weeks you have probably got over any of these things by now I guess but congrats on the pregnancy, hope everything goes well and look forward to hearing about your exploits in Norway and about a change in your life in around 20 weeks or so,
