Nice areas/neighborhoods to visit in Munich Posted: Sun July 5, 2009 06:17 PM UTC
Hello,
I will be visiting Munich in early September with my wife (we're in our early 30s). I am curious to know about nice/interesting and lively neighborhoods in Munich where one can see cute stores, cozy cafes, decent restaurants, and feel the life of a typical Munich resident outside of the tourist traps of the old city center.
Also, because we are planning several 1-day trips, we will have a lot of evenings to spend in Munich (staying near the main rail station) within 15-min walk from Marienplatz. So I am curious to know of good areas to go to in the evening (don't care that much about dance clubs, but want to visit lively areas where people hang out in the evening).

I'm still not really familiar with Munich, but I'd say Glockenbach- and Gaertnerplatzviertel, the area between Sendlinger Tor (subway), Fraunhoferstrasse (subway), i.e. around Gaertnerplatz, fits your description nicely.

Hello, Try to fit in a visit to the Englische Garten one evening at the Chinese Pagoda. There are tables to sit and eat/drink beer, you take your own food or buy there, often there is a band playing at the Pagoda. Your hotel will advise which U_Bahn route, also visit Schwantaller Strasse (student quarter) full of lively cafes and coffee bars, A visit to one of Munich's great Beer halls is also a fun option in the evening or a visit to the Plaetzel Restuarant for Bavarian costume comedy. I'm English and lived in Bavaria for 14 yrs, these are some of my favourite places in Munich. We shall be in the area 4/9 till 11/9, who knows, we may meet in the E.G.
Best regards Keith and Eileen, enjoy Munich--We Do!

Hi leoinv1,
just a small addition to the two previous posts:
Schwabing is also a nice area with some nightlife.
It's the area west of the Englischer Garten, in between Universität in the south up to Münchner Freiheit in the north, extending a couple of parallel streets west of Ludwig/Leopoldstrasse.
Schwabing is in easy walking distance of the Englischer Garten and has some nice old and some Jugendstil (1920's Architecture) houses.
Just two comments to my previous poster's tips:
The Glockenbachviertel is a good one. Nice, lively, enjoyable.. But it's not for the overly homophobic. Don't miss out on it, though, It's really nice there.
I never thought of Schwanthalerstrasse as student area. Electrical engineering, maybe.. It's rather close to the main station, and in my experience, the areas around large stations are rarely the nicest ones.. Schwanthalerstrasse (and Schillerstrasse) feature a rather quaint mix of shops selling electronics, computer equipment and so on, mixed with turkish import/export shops, selling everything, garnished with topless bars selling overpriced drinks (so I've been told ;-) But again, none of this should keep you from finding out yourself..
Enjoy Munich,
Glissi

I think keith mixed up schwanthalerstrasse with leopoldstraße.
gärtnerplatz i warmly recommend, especially on a warm summer evening a great place to hang out and have a couple of beers, maybe a short walk to "bergwolf" to grab a currywurst and fries. there are a lot of small shops and nice bars and restaurants in that area.
