I'm trying to find out about trains between villefranche and Nice but the SNCF/TER website doesn't seem to understand me. Is it posssible to do this trip? Where can I find out about timetables?

Real Time arrivals board for Nice Ville is here

http://www.gares-en-mouvement.com/infostempsreel-arrivee-en-1-frnic-0.html

Villefranche - Nice is two stops - 10 minutes, for trains originating from Vintimille or Menton

The TER website is here - put in start and finish stations, date and time of travel and Bob's your auntie

French websites can be a little flaky and the usual assumption is that you speak French (but slowly they are providing translations in English and Italian)

There are usually two or three an hour, though they are not infrequently the subject of delays (Retarde) when not on strike, or a catastrophe has closed the network. Other than that they are pretty reliable.

its just a 7-8 minute train ride and easy to do

be sure to avoid VilleFranche when the cruise ships are in port - exit to another town ASAP

You can get a personalized timetable from this page:
http://www.voyages-sncf.com/services-train/fiches-horaires?rfrr=Homepage_body_services_fichehoraire

type in villefranche sur mer in departure box, nice in arrival box and type the dates of your trip using this format sample: 06/07/2009 (DD/MM/YYYY),

this will give you a full schedule for your dates on a pdf that you can download and print.
