Mexico Driving to Yucatan
Posted: Sun July 5, 2009 02:25 PM UTC
Friends of mine are getting married in the Yucatan area at the end of December. Anther friend and myself are planning on driving down from US/Mexican border along the Gulf of Mexico. Anyone have any tips, comments, etc? He is fluent Spanish and we have driven through Guatemala and Hondorus so we're not too concerned about the drive and places to stay en route as we don't need anything fancy. Any places you recommend stopping to see on the way down?

What part of the Yucatan area?
Quintana Roo? (east)
Yucatan state (north/central)
Campeche (west)

Stop at Izamal (Yuc) and see the yellow town.
If you are on the caribbean side, follow the coast through Tulum until Bacalar.
Maybe you can go for a visit to "cenotes", mayan archaeology or renovated haciendas (cenotes and archaeology sites are almost all over the place, old fashioned haciendas are mostly in Yucatan state).
You can drive to Chicxulub (north yuc coast) and stop to see Flamingo (seasonal).

I hope vtmember redlats comes and drops a line, he has more experience as a visitor driving in the peninsula. I used to drive there with no problems, but I was born driving in mexico and I see things different from a visitor.

Good luck in your trip! and Congratulations to the soon to be weds!
